As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly a singles band, and CHRONICLE compiles many of their biggest hits. From the slowly building saunter of "Suzie Q" and the spooky, R&B-soaked "I Put a Spell on You" to the fierce "Fortunate Son" and the swampy blues of "Run Through the Jungle," CHRONICLE features the ensemble's signature tunes. Beautifully melancholy songs "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Someday Never Comes" play off sunny, melodic anthems "Down on the Corner" and "Lookin' Out My Back Door," fully revealing the band's wide range. The group's tight, no-frills musicianship leaves John Fogerty's keening voice and superb songwriting at the fore, and the results--brought together here on one of rock's best greatest-hits packages--make for some of the genre's most endearing and enduring music.

Best 70s Southern Rock

Created: 08/11/07
Awesome compilation. CCR at its best. Creedence Clearwater Revival was probably the greatest American singles band, one of the hardest-working American groups of any genre, and almost the only exponent of working-class sensibility in American rock & roll -- particularly California rock & roll -- after the advent of Haight-Ashbury and before the rise of punk.

Led by guitarist/vocalist/writer John Fogerty, the group simply pumped out classic rock singles, one after another, in much the same rockabilly spirit as Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, adding some touches of New Orleans R&B and other relatively antediluvian sources. On its first album (Creedence Clearwater Revival), the band attempted to stretch out, as was then the fashion, but though the approach garnered a hit with "Suzie Q," an extended version of the Dale Hawkins classic, Creedence didn't really hit stride until Fogerty tightened up some three-minute songs. Then began the flood: "Bad Moon Rising," "Born on the Bayou," "Commotion," Down on the Corner," "Green River," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (an extended song that worked), "Proud Mary," "Travelin' Band" and "Who'll Stop the Rain." All of this occurred between 1968 and 1973, when the group fell apart.
Perhaps best of all were "Lodi," the story of a working rocker's depression at being stuck in another out-of-the-way gin mill and his determination to beat everyone, and "Fortunate Son," a stab at the privileged that only kids from the wrong side of the ultra-hip San Francisco area could have felt so sharply. (Creedence arose from roughly the same town as the psychedelic bands, but came from much poorer families.) And after a time, Fogerty burned to prove that he was as much an artist as anyone in the Grateful Dead -- he apparently did not know that he was already more -- and the group tried to stretch out, to make nominally "progressive" music. Not all of this was unsuccessful, by any means -- "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is more intense than any six minutes of Grateful Dead music on record -- but still, his metier was the single. Eventually, the group tried to achieve a communal balance, the other members of the quartet contributing songs to the final studio record, Mardi Gras, a noble but disappointing affair. Since then, it's all been repackages, except for the lamentable Live in Europe.

A "must have" for any CD collection:

Created: 18/06/06
I generally try for Greatest Hits or Best Of CD's when building my collection. Any fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival would love this CD as it is filled with hit after hit. CHRONICLE Volume 1 covers 20 of CCR's biggest hits including my favorites, "Fortunate Son" & "Who'll Stop The Rain". They're all here except for "Born On The Bayou", "The Midnight Special" & "Before You Accuse Me" where you would have to get CHRONICLE Vol.2 to really make this collection complete. John Fogerty wrote 17 of the songs on this CD and I feel that he deserves more recognition than he has received throughout his career. Creedence was mainly a singles band,so,instead of running out and getting several CD's/offerings - I strongly recommend getting CHRONICLE Vol.1 as it's one of the best "Greatest Hits" CD's out there.

Call it what you like, rockabilly with country and rhythm & blues influences but it's still rock & roll to me!!!

Creedance is the greatest!

Created: 03/04/07
Creedance Clearwater Revival is one of the most original, unique and alive singing groups of the 20th century and possessed a special musical quality that pierced the listener's very soul. My 18-year-old son had just taken up the guitar and was interested in the best of the classic talents of my youth: Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, etc. I told him, You haven't heard anything until you've heard Creedance!, and bought him the DVD of their greatest hits on eBay. When he heard their music, he was in total agreement of my assessment, and has been getting the chords to their most popular songs off the Internet. I understand they are still playing for the nostalgia generation and hope someday my son and I can see them perform live.

Great CD at a Great Price

Created: 07/10/06
Credence Clearwater Revival is solid rock classic and is a wonderful collection of their greatest hits. Plus, the price was way beyond reasonable compared to what you would pay in a retail store. There were a couple of songs that I was not familiar with that didn't particularly "grab" me, but for the most part it is a great CD. If you like CCR, then you will enjoy this classic collection of songs. It is all rock with a slight tinge of country style.

CCR Greatest Hits--can't go wrong!!!

Created: 05/03/07
This is my first Creedence Clearwater Revival album and it's definately a MUST OWN. Not being a purist (or shackled in dogma), I love the concept and economy of "Greatest Hits" albums--because it's hard to escape the fact that many bands have albums with songs which merely weigh down the listening experience. Take heart, there are a few exceptions--Led Zepplin, Eric Clapton, etc. The downside of Greatest Hits albums are the hidden gems discovered if one were to own the complete collection...and I'll probably never know if this is true for CCR.
