Product description

Synopsis
This set includes all seven volumes of the classic, allegorical, and greatly beloved children's fantasy series, the Chronicles of Narnia: THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW; THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE; THE HORSE AND HIS BOY; PRINCE CASPIAN; THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER; THE SILVER CHAIR; and THE LAST BATTLE. Children of England (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie; Eustace Scrubb; Jill Pole; Digory Kirke; and Polly Plummer) find their way into Narnia, a magical land with talking animals, stupid giants, friendly fauns, and evil witches, watched over by the wise and noble lion Aslan, son of the Emperor-over-sea. Once there, the children take part in the battle between good and evil, experiencing many adventures and making profound moral choices that alter both the country and themselves forever. There is some dispute about the correct reading order of the books. The first published book was THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE, in which young Lucy Pevensie walks through a wardrobe to discover a snow-bound Narnia. THE HORSE AND HIS BOY, about a poor boy with a mysterious heritage, two enslaved talking horses, and a young noblewoman escaping an arranged marriage who prevent an invasion, actually overlaps in time with THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE but was published fifth. Meanwhile, the book published sixth, THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW, is the earliest in the series timeline; it features Digory Kirke, the elderly owner of the magic wardrobe, as a young boy and concerns the creation of Narnia. Regardless of the order in which the novels are read, the series is considered a landmark in the genre.

Publisher's Note

Journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil -- what more could any reader ask for in one book? The book that has it all is the lion, the witch and the wardrobe, written in 1949 by C. S. Lewis. But Lewis did not stop there. Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia.

For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a world where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations.

This edition presents all seven books -- unabridged -- in one impressive volume. The books are presented here according to Lewis's preferred order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes. This edition also contains C. S. Lewis's essay "On Three Ways of Writing for Children," in which he explains precisely how the magic of Narnia and the realm of fantasy appeal not only to children but to discerning readers of all ages. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captivate fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to all readers, even fifty years after the books were first published.

Aslan, the noble lion, and the royal leaders of Narnia struggle against the magical forces of evil.

Beautifully repackaged and featuring the original black-and-white interior illustrations, a collection of the seven classic stories, centering around the magical world of Narnia, will delight a new generation of readers.

Although the book would be rather bulky for younger hands, this is a great edition for older children and adults. Not only do you get all seven books in the series in one hardcover, but you get the original illustrations by Pauline Baynes, Lewis's illustrator since "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" was first published. If that weren't enough, this edition also includes an essay by Lewis: "On Three Ways of Writing for Children." The essay gives a little insight into how the Chronicles came into being, and also discusses the value of "Fantasy" as a genre for children--and adults as well. He answers the critics who think that Fantasy and Fairy Tale give children a false concept of the world. The essay alone is worth the price of the book!

The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis

I bought this book to give as a Christmas gift to my 9 year old grand nephew. They are the only children stories written by C. S. Lewis and they have religious undertones
I read the seven "Chronicles" several years ago. These are classic stories that all children should read or have read to them. I loved them, and became a child again while reading them.
These stories are appealing to both children and adults. They are wonderful and take you along with the children in the stories to another world called Narnia, where animals can talk and, good and bad things can happen, but with the help of the animals, dwarves and other characters, especially the great lion, Aslan, they win out against their enemies. Each story is different and sometimes the characters change, but always present are the talking animals and Aslan.
I highly recommend this book it is wonderful.

Classic

Created: 09/12/05
I read the entire Chronicles of Narnia at my childhood. Now, after buying the boxed set of the Chronicals for my daughter, I am reading them all again. It is fun to discuss the action with my kid. I suggest every other mother who may have read these as a child, take the time to go back over them... I assure the full enjoyment.

Narnia series will remain a classic for decades and generations to come. The heartwarming tales of a lion teach children some valuable lessons. I think C. S. Lewis's a great collection belongs to any children's library. As for the contemporary authors I mostly recommend B. Nowiki's new series "Why Some Cats are Rascals". Rascal is just a house cat, not a lion, but he will teach your children as important lessens as did Narnia's lion.

Intelligent, Inspiring Fantasy Fiction for All Ages

Created: 20/12/05
I'm not much of a re-reader ~ once through a book is usually enough for me. But these are different. I read them as a child and was amazed when I read them again as an adult; how deep and encouraging and full of truth they are! I have read them at least 3 times as an adult and would not be at all bored to do it again. Some fiction leaves one yearning for magic powers or the alternate world of the story setting. These books may spark your desire to make magic with what is at hand, in the setting you see when you close the cover. Good moral and spiritual food for children and adult minds, these will entertain you while doing you well all at the same time.

Created: 04/01/10
I love the whole Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I wanted the Narnia series in one book. It was great especially the price. I was going to pay more the softcover series of Narnia. The fact that it was a hardback cover and in great shape I just couldn't pass it up. Great book!
