Product description

Synopsis
This set includes all seven volumes of the classic, allegorical, and greatly beloved children's fantasy series, the Chronicles of Narnia: THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW; THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE; THE HORSE AND HIS BOY; PRINCE CASPIAN; THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER; THE SILVER CHAIR; and THE LAST BATTLE. Children of England (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie; Eustace Scrubb; Jill Pole; Digory Kirke; and Polly Plummer) find their way into Narnia, a magical land with talking animals, stupid giants, friendly fauns, and evil witches, watched over by the wise and noble lion Aslan, son of the Emperor-over-sea. Once there, the children take part in the battle between good and evil, experiencing many adventures and making profound moral choices that alter both the country and themselves forever. There is some dispute about the correct reading order of the books. The first published book was THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE, in which young Lucy Pevensie walks through a wardrobe to discover a snow-bound Narnia. THE HORSE AND HIS BOY, about a poor boy with a mysterious heritage, two enslaved talking horses, and a young noblewoman escaping an arranged marriage who prevent an invasion, actually overlaps in time with THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE but was published fifth. Meanwhile, the book published sixth, THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW, is the earliest in the series timeline; it features Digory Kirke, the elderly owner of the magic wardrobe, as a young boy and concerns the creation of Narnia. Regardless of the order in which the novels are read, the series is considered a landmark in the genre.

Don't judge a book by its movie...GREAT SERIES!

Created: 10/11/05
I really wanted the movie to be great - had looked forward to it for a year before its release. It lacked character development and good story telling.

The books are by far, much better.

With the first book, The Magician's Nephew, Lewis creates wonderful possibilities with a magical way to travel from one world to the next, and with great character development in Aslan the lion, a king of kings.
The way of travel in the first book is not repeated throughout the other six books in the series and thus, the only worlds visited in the remaining books are our own world and that of Narnia.

The series is a great read for early readers because it is easy to read and the story compels one to continue reading to find out what happens next.

For adults, it may be a little too far fetched and predictable in that Aslan seems to always have to come to the rescue. I liked the series as a break from my Robin Cook and Dean Koontz, and I must admit, I could not stop until I finished the last book - even then wishing there was one more in the series to read.

A little mindless fantasy world where animals speak and giants roam can be a fun quick read. Each book can be read in a day if not disturbed by cats, kids, phone, work... maybe a book a week for young readers. Just the kind of style a 3rd to 6th grader could REALLY get in to, (I'm late 30's and I was HOOKED!)

Have yet to see a good movie based on this series.

Excellent Series -- For Children and Adults both

Created: 06/03/10
The series is excellent, easy enough for a child to read (one who's up for chapter books), but with enough hidden symbolism to catch the imagination of an adult as well. It follows a family through a fantastic world on various adventures to fight evil, protect their friends, and discover new parts of their new world. Very creative and imaginative, and a continuous story. Also, you can read 1-7 or you read book 2, 4, 5, 7 without getting lost or noting that you missed a great part of the story line.

Definitely classics, though their age hasn't taken anything from the story.

Having the whole set together like this is very convenient as you start in order -- people often skip the Magician's Nephew as the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the most well known of the series -- though, like I said, order doesn't matter too much.

Excellent Series

Created: 01/11/10
I purchased this series for my son who is 9 years old and he flew through the whole set. Even though I had read the books when I was a child, I found myself reading them again and enjoying them even more the second time around. C.S. Lewis is a brilliant writer and these stories are very exciting. My son and I enjoyed many discussions about the plot, characters, and symbolism used and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
