Album Notes
Barely more than a year after her much-hyped comeback album, BLACKOUT, Britney Spears returned with another studio outing, 2008's CIRCUS. Though the title acknowledges the drama of Britney's personal and public life, the record primarily takes on the big-top theme in a general "let me entertain you" approach, as evinced by the sassy, uber-catchy singles "Womanizer" and "Circus." This dance-pop vibe extends to "Kill the Lights" and the winking "If U Seek Amy," among other tracks, proving that Spears still has the club in mind despite past unfortunate nightlife exploits. The relatively wholesome, soft-focus cover of CIRCUS isn't completely misleading, however, since Britney puts the beats and her bad-girl persona aside for mellow, thoughtful tunes such as "Out from Under" and "My Baby," gentle tracks produced by Guy Sigsworth, also renowned for his work with Bjork and Madonna. While not a drastic departure from BLACKOUT, CIRCUS is the work of a seemingly more grounded superstar, and it largely succeeds in refocusing on Britney as a performer, rather than reinforcing her status as a tabloid fixture.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- [C]andy-coated bangers that move beyond freaky tantrums and into Madonna-type provocation.
Blender

From the synthy open of 'Womanizer' to the regretful ache spurring 'Blur,' CIRCUS gives Brit pop a whole new meaning, as the singer does double duty as a dance diva and brokenhearted balladeer.
Billboard

[H]alfway through, CIRCUS shifts from defiant booty calls to subtler material; suddenly, it's a first-rate electro-pop album. -- Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly

3.5 stars out of 5 -- The clubby, adventurous pop on her sixth album...would have made a fine follow-up to 2003's IN THE ZONE.

Britney's musical comeback

Created: 09/12/08
I know what you're thinking because I had similar thoughts. The press has dragged Britney around for the last number of years and it seems like every move she ever made is reported. It honestly got the point where I literally got sick of hearing about her. The one thing I'm not sick of is her music. Britney's team knows how to deliver good music. Blackout (cd from last year) was such an all around amazing cd. Will Circus be half as good as Blackout? I think that's a question in the back of a lot of people's minds. I honestly must say that the cd is just as amazing as Blackout. I only have two small problems with the cd. Let me break down the songs and give you ratings for each song.

1. Womanizer--I have to admit I thought it was a rather ehish song the first time I heard it. It took a few listens for me to really grow to enjoy it. 4 stars out of 5

2. Circus--This song is so catchy. I immediately liked it right away. 5 stars out of 5

3. Out From Under--A beautiful slow song. 4 stars out of 5.

4. Kill the Lights--Yeah, this applies in the same category as Circus. It's definitely a song you can dance/sing to. 5 stars out of 5

5. Shattered Glass--Amazing song! 5 stars out of 5

6. If You Seek Amy--I have to admit the title is rather creative. You'll see what I mean when you listen to the song. 5 stars out of 5

7. Unusual You--Another beautiful slow type song. 5 out of 5

8. Blur--It's an okay song. You can definitely listen to it but it's not as catchy as other songs on the album. 3 stars out of 5

9. MMM Papi--Here's where opinions start to divide. I've seen/heard a lot of people think this song is awful. I love the beat to the song so that's why I immediately loved it from first listen. 5 out of 5

10. Mannequin--Another song you can sing/dance to. 5 out of 5

11. Lace and Leather--Super catchy song. 4.5 out of 5

12. My Baby--This is definitely the weak song on the cd. I'll probably skip over this one tbh. 1.5 out of 5

13. Radar--This isn't a different version or a remixed version. This is the same song that was on Blackout. Radar was a good song over on the Blackout cd but I'm not too crazy about the fact they included it on this cd. I realize why they did it. Sounds like they have to make a single out of this song to avoid being sued. I still have to stand by the opinion of wishing they'd included "Trouble" instead of Radar.

Okay, time to talk about artwork. I must admit I'm not too big of a fan of the cover picture, back cover picture, most of the cd booklet art. The only good picture is the one with Britney walking on the tightrope on the back of the cd booklet. Everything else looks photoshopped to hell and back.

Anyway, I think if you're a fan of Britney's music you'll definitely enjoy Circus. That's not to say you can't enjoy this cd and not be a Britney fan at all. Different strokes for different folks and all that. I would still stress the fact of going to a website and preview song snippets before purchasing. I'd recommend that for anything though.

Possibly Her Best Album Yet

Created: 17/04/09
Coming from a long time Britney fan, obviously I loved this album. However, that is not the only reason. This album has everything to expect from Britney. It has great good old pop hits such as "Womanizer" and "Circus", songs that cross the line and are just generally fun such as "If U Seek Amy" (the best on the album), "Lace and Leather", and "Blur", some electropop previously seen on Blackout like "Kill the Lights" and "Radar" (which was also on Blackout), great ballads like "Unusual You" and "Out From Under", and just random and funny songs like "Shattered Glass", "MMM Papi" and "Mannequin". Plus, if you have the deluxe version their is "Rock Me In" and "Phonography", two great songs.

It is basically everything from the past put onto one disc. This was a great album and I listen to it daily. The album is well put together and I remember being sad after listening to it the first time, she leaves you wanting for more. Even if your not a fan of Britney, this is one great pop album. Even people who don't like her seem to love this album. How could they not? This is her most brilliantly produced album yet. The album changes direction all the time to keep you interested. A must have album.

BRITNEY SPEARS "CIRCUS" CD

Created: 16/02/09
REGARDLESS OF HER PERSONAL ISSUES, BRITNEY ONCE AGAIN PUTS TOGETHER AN ALBUM WITH MORE OF HER SIGNATURE SONGS. NOT THE POP QUEEN BUT THE QUEEN OF POPULAR SINGLES, HER SONGS "CIRCUS" AND "WOMANIZER" ARE TRULY CLASSIC BRITNEY. SOME OF THE LESS FAMILIAR SONGS ARE CATCHY AS WELL, AND I HAVE TO GIVE THIS CD 5 OUT OF 5 STARS.

Britney is BACK

Created: 20/12/08
The Legendary Ms. Britney Spears is back with her sixth studio album. No matter what all the haters say, all of them are beggin to IF U SEEK A...(Britney.) Great tracks such us 'Circus', 'Out From Under', 'Mannequin' and the Nº1 Hit 'Womanizer' are just what we all needed to believe in pop music again.

This CD is fantastic!

Created: 06/03/09
I purchased this because #1- I love Britney's music. #2- I don't care about public personas, I like what I like for sound and lyrics first and foremost. My favorite songs on this CD are Circus, Womanizer, My Baby, and Radar. I have all of them on repeat and I can't get enough of them. The other songs are good, some better than others, I just don't listen to them nearly as much. I think this CD is worth every penny and I'm happy to see Brit will be back on tour. This CD shows why she's a great entertainer.
