Civil War Battles
Created: 24/03/09
A History Channel DVD production that outlines four of the critical battles
of the American Civil War. Antietam, Shiloh, Gettysburg and Cold Harbor were
4 of the bloodiest battles ever in American History. This DVD outlines with
maps and historians speaking their views on the strategy and the outcome of
certain phases of each battle (i.e.- the Wheatfield at Gettysburg on the second
day of the battle-had the confederates been able to break the union line here
it could have basically rolled up the flank of the union army (on a techinal
basis). As we have seen in the battles that it was tried (Chancellorsville,
2nd Bull Run, etc-it never seemed to work out). A GREAT DVD for studiers of
the Civil War, General Warfare or just American History in General.

As a hugh Civil War buff, I like to get certain videos that explain the battles that were fought during that conflict.
This video goes over aspects of four major battles: The Hornet's Nest at Shiloh, Bloody Lane at Antietam, the Wheatfield at Gettysburg, and Grant's miscalculation at Cold Harbor.
The re-enactments help bring it to life, although some of the footage is used more than once in different battles. Overall, it is a rather good video.

I LOOK AT THINGS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN SOME PEOPLE, MY UNCLE OF SEVERAL GENERATIONS PAST WAS WITH THE 15TH IOWA UNIT THAT TRAVELED TO SHILOH, 18 YEARS OLD, AND BY ALL ACCOOUTS WAS PUT INTO SERVICE AS A DRUMMER BOY. HE WAS KILLED ON APRIL 6TH IN THE FIRST BATTLE OF SHILOH. AND MY GRANDFATHER OF FOUR GNERATIONS FOUGHT UNDER STONEWALL JACKSON FOR THE CONFEDERATES. I LIKE HISTORY IN GENERAL SO THIS DVD WAS HELPING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MY RELATIVES WENT THROUGH, IN AN EVERDAY OCCURANCE. WOULD RECOMMEND THIS DVD TO ANYONE THAT LIKE TO SEE WHAT HELPED, EVEN MOST OF THE EVENTS WERE BAD, HOW THIS DID MADE HUGE CHANGES IN WHAT OUR COUNTRY IS TODAY, FROM SLAVERY ISSUES, AND BY ALL ACCOUNTS BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER. I GIVE IT AND A+

This DVD examines the details of four brutal battles including the "sunken road" at Antietam and the "wheat field" at Gettysburg. I did not know how much action the Irish Brigade (Fighting 69th) saw.

I teach high school American history and love teaching about the Civil War. This will be a great addition/supplement to my lecture next year. The student truly connect to video clips.
