    Industry Reviews
"Of the eleven tales that make up CLOSE RANGE...seven or eight are merely very good, and at least three are off the scale....Proulx has something in common [with Willa Cather], not least her raptness before a high-plains dawn...and a vatic sense--the staple of pastoral--that people are bound by their early memories; that there is no migration without the fugitive promise of homecoming."
Times Literary Supplement - Will Eaves (06/11/1999)

"Everything in her work attests to long practice of keen observation, a hoarding of images and facts, and the painstaking perfection of a craft which allows her to address the most pungent and raw subject matter in a style remarkable not just for vigor but for delicacy and finesse....The best [of these stories] carry with them the present and the past of America, enfolded like twins in the womb."
New York Review of Books - Hilary Mantel (05/11/2000)

    Brokeback Mountain/Close Range

Annie Proulx has a special gift that few authors have, that is the ability to live in the characters. I love her ability to bring you in, as though you were actually there, you experience what she is writing about. After I saw B B M, and I was completely overcome with emotions, being that I am, in many ways one of the characters she wrote about. I read the story, then acquired the Close Range, again blown away by her ability to draw you in. Nothing has captured my attention like this, since I read Front Runner, by Patricia Nell Warren, years ago. Thankyou Annie Proulx, for this wonderful story about two (2) men who fall in love. My partner and I, again, in many ways are these two (2) men. We also happen to be cowboys.

Plays upon examination of raw lives.

    Created: 02/04/11
Proulx writes like you wish you could. She creates folks who are more real than you are and situations that force unblinking reexamination of what makes people tough or tender, moral or not. Living on margins and low expectations.
Read her and adjust your forced fantasies about noble mankind. Life is very hard outside of suburban America. Cruel and rarely fair.
