    Movie synopsis

Alan Parker's THE COMMITMENTS, based on Roddy Doyle's buoyant debut novel, follows the enjoyable travails of a band cobbled together by young Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins), whose vision is to bring soul music to Dublin. After putting an ad in the local paper, Jimmy assembles an unlikely group of musicians who, though nervous, raw, and rough, make music that speaks to something very near the heart of their audience of curious kids and sharp-tongued, sarcastic relatives. As the band nears its big break, egos clash and expectations of fame and fortune start to tear them apart, forcing Jimmy to fight desperately to keep them together.THE COMMITMENTS bubbles over with life, largely on the strength of the young, mostly unknown cast. Andrew Strong shines in the role of the lead singer exuding a volatile and irresistible charisma as he transforms rapidly from an unsure adolescent into an egotistical spotlight hogger. Colm Meaney contributes a hilarious cameo as Jimmy's father (a role that would expand in two later film adaptations of Doyle novels, THE SNAPPER and THE VAN). Pumped along by killer 1960s soul tunes and crackling throughout with quick-witted dialogue, THE COMMITMENTS is an effervescent, affecting tour through working-class Dublin.

    A Story With Soul

    Created: 06/12/06
This movie is an endearing romp through one man's dream of putting together a local band playing soul music in Dublin, Ireland. It traces the formation of the group, practice sessions and gigs while giving glimpses into the personal lives of the band members. I like the way the film builds not only the story, but the music. At the beginning, the soul sound is thin as evidenced by the slight voices of the backup singers and musicians. But with practice, the girls learn to belt out Aretha Franklin with the best, and the band gains a rich, full sound. Even the lead singer improves as the film progresses. The music makes you want to get up and dance. There is only one drawback to the movie. The dialog is in English, but with an Irish accent which is a little difficult to understand by American ears. It tweaks the brain, but becomes more comfortable as the movie unfolds. Although this is not a Hollywood blockbuster, I found the film complete and satisfying especially when it told what happened to the band members after the demise of the band.

This is a true story about a band from Dublin, Ireland. The movie tells the story of the band and stars all the original band members. Good soul music and a great singer! If you are (or were) in a band, you will really appreciate this movie!!!

An original comedy from the late 90s

    Created: 27/01/11
I've been looking for a copy of this film for a few years. I saw a "clean version" on TV a few years ago and found myself laughing almost every couple of minutes. Regardless of the sometimes hard-to-hear-dialect of the actors, you get an entertaining view into the world of Dublin youth. The dad in the film has a picture of Elvis above the Pope. The band Jimmy Rabbite is trying to put together is full of goofy characters from all corners of Dublin, Ireland. There's even a scene where Jimmy comes across a kid with a horse looking to board an elevator at an apartment complex. Jimmy protests about the horse going on the elevator, but the kid says the horse has to ride the elevator because the stairs would kill him... There are so many funny quips and lines that are reminiscent of other cult comedies such as REAL GENIUS. The music and the representation of real talent is great too.

    The Commitments (1999, DVD)

One of my favorite kick-back and enjoy movies. It is totally unique; dark blue collar Dublin with dry humor and fabulous music. If you enjoy "The Tudors," you will be most intrigued by the 'other' side of Maria Doyle Kennedy (Queen Katherine of Aragon) -- the lady can really, really sing Motown, with an Irish twist, of course! Just love this film - FIVE STARS.
