    Movie synopsis

Alan Parker's THE COMMITMENTS, based on Roddy Doyle's buoyant debut novel, follows the enjoyable travails of a band cobbled together by young Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins), whose vision is to bring soul music to Dublin. After putting an ad in the local paper, Jimmy assembles an unlikely group of musicians who, though nervous, raw, and rough, make music that speaks to something very near the heart of their audience of curious kids and sharp-tongued, sarcastic relatives. As the band nears its big break, egos clash and expectations of fame and fortune start to tear them apart, forcing Jimmy to fight desperately to keep them together.THE COMMITMENTS bubbles over with life, largely on the strength of the young, mostly unknown cast. Andrew Strong shines in the role of the lead singer exuding a volatile and irresistible charisma as he transforms rapidly from an unsure adolescent into an egotistical spotlight hogger. Colm Meaney contributes a hilarious cameo as Jimmy's father (a role that would expand in two later film adaptations of Doyle novels, THE SNAPPER and THE VAN). Pumped along by killer 1960s soul tunes and crackling throughout with quick-witted dialogue, THE COMMITMENTS is an effervescent, affecting tour through working-class Dublin.

    An All-Time Favorite

    Created: 08/07/06
This movie received limited play here in the U.S., as it was shot in Ireland. I remember watching it around 1991 or 1992 on a recommendation from a friend. It was and still is one of my favorite films of all time. The actors are mostly unknown, but their performances are utterly believable. The movie is about an out of work Dubliner putting together an American style blues/soul band. The actors are also musicians, and their musical performances are incredible. In fact, I own both soundtracks to the movie, and listen to them often.

I bought this version of the DVD because it supposedly has been reworked since the original DVD came out. This version does offer Dolby 5.1 surround sound, which makes the musical performances sound even better. It also has a second disk of extras that was not with the first version that has some fascinating insight on life in Dublin.

I highly recommend this DVD! For those who have not seen it, do so as soon as possible. I have recommended it to all of my friends, and none have come away disappointed. If you have seen it and enjoyed it, find a copy of this version on e-bay and buy it for the extras!! It will add to the experience that is The Commitments!!

    Dublin Soul!!

    Created: 24/10/08
This is one of my favorite movies.. it is so unique, amusing, well shot, perfectly casted, and of course has lots of great music. This movie is about a bunch of down and out young Dubliners who form a soul band and do classic tunes by such artists as Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin. Superb performances by everyone - and this is really amazing considering almost all of the cast had not acted before.
This movie is rated R for language.. LOTS of foul language, but swearing with an Irish accent really sounds funny to me, so I don't mind.
If you want to see an original film, like soul music (and don't mind white people trying to do it - that's partly why this movie is funny) then buy or at least rent this film.. tonight!

    The Commitments - DVD

Do you like R&B... Soul...Blues music? Then you will probably enjoy "The Commitments". Based on a true story about a group of underprivilaged Irish kids from the ghettos of Dublin forming a band to play the music of the oppressed ....SOUL! They are a rag tag bunch who have grown up believing that drinking and fighting is the normal way of life. Against tough odds, they get their band together and play some great music. Their story is very entertaining with dynamic interactions between band members. I don't want to reveal how it all works out, but, the music alone is worth the price. As an added bonus, the band made two CD's based on the movie soundtrack. After watching the move, I had to get the CD's.

The Commitments "The best movie ever!"

    Created: 08/02/11
This movie is timeless! No matter how many times you watch it, it will continue to entertain you. I decided to buy this movie, because I am a musician myself. I love this Genre of music, and have played it for years. I seen this movie years ago, and just had to have it. Now my old one is worn out, and it was time to buy a new one. With songs like 'Mustang Sally", who wouldn't like it? So, I give this movie a 5 star rating, and highly recommend to everyone!
