The rich tapestry of Renaissance-era Venice serves as the backdrop for this historical novel by the author of THE BIRTH OF VENUS. After the rapacious army of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V invades Rome in 1527, the courtesan Fiammetta Bianchini loses most of her wealth and beauty. But she and her business partner (and the book's narrator), the dwarf Bucino Teodoldo, manage to make their way to Venice, where the skills of a mysterious healer and the duo's resilience restore Fiammetta's looks and her preeminent position in society.

    Industry Reviews
"[D]elicious.....Through Bucino's sharp-eyed, sharp-tongued narration, Dunant crafts a vivid vision of Venetian life....Dunant's characters...are irresistible throughout their shifting fortunes." (starred review)
    Publishers Weekly (10/24/2005)

"Dunant has a penchant for the past and a taste for blood; much of her strength as a historical novelist comes from her ability to make readers taste and smell the world her characters inhabit."
    (03/12/2006)

"COURTESAN finally emerges as something very rare, a celebration of the complicated and undersung affections that flourish between colleagues and friends. Through Bucino, the novel aligns itself not with glamorous aristocrats and virtuous maidens, but with everyone who pulls his or her own weight in a world that's very seldom romantic or sentimental."
    (02/16/2006)

"Dunant uses language that feels antique without seeming ridiculous, and she treats the past as a real place rather than an amusement park. She never lets the reader forget that her Venice is a 16th-century city, offering just the right mix of raw sewage and gold-domed cathedrals, but she also makes it convincingly modern: truly cosmopolitan, ruled by commerce and gossip....Rich, rewarding and wonderfully well-crafted entertainment." (starred review)

In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant (2006)

This novel is set in Rome and Venice of 1527. The story is told from the point of view of Bucino, a dwarf, who is business manager and a friend to Fiammetta Bianchini. Without giving away the good stuff, the story centers on the life of the courtesan and what it means to not only survive but become part of the higher social life of the city (Venice). What I liked most about it was the descriptions of the every day life in Venice in the Middle Ages. Also, the story line was interesting with it's twists and turns and surprises. I rate this 4-1/2 stars out of 5.

In the Company of the Courtesan- A warm company indeed

I saved this book for bedtime reading. I read many books as part of my job, so when I come across one that as rich as this one, it is pure joy for me. The rich historical details of Renaissance life and the decadence and intrigue of Venice create a warm fantasy of perfect relaxation reading before bedtime. The unusual relationship between the mistress and her manager is both perverse and practical while the characters from the warm lands of the Mediterranean present a rich character counterpoint of romance and commerce. I loved the romance, the intrigue and especially the warmth of the fantasy life at the Mistress' palazzo.
    Bellisima!

    Renaissance Venice

    Created: 03/04/09
The author must have spent ages researching her history for this plot....being familiar with current day Venice indicated to me at the onset of the story she knew what she was writing about.....

This would make a movie superior to GWTW. The colors, scenery, and costumes would out do the recent film, Casanova in scope and plot....

I intend to read everything written by Dunant, it's so refreshing to find a female author who doesn't write gratuitous chick flick, soap style romance stories.
