Album Notes
Liner Note Author: Colin Escott. The product of a casual afternoon jam session in 1956 between Elvis Presley, then the biggest star in America, and the rock & roll legends Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, these songs are a world away from the tight, well-produced rock & roll that Sam Phillips's Sun Studios was recording and releasing in the mid-1950s. More than half the material heard here consists of gospel music, and there are also versions of Chuck Berry's "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" and "Too Much Monkey Business," as well as some classic country songs penned by Hank Snow, Gene Autry, and Bill Monroe. Relaxed and informal, these recordings are an illuminating snapshot of a moment in rock & roll history.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- [T]he session has, for the first time, been pieced together in the very order that it took place....The session transmutes into a ramshackle chunk of joy...

Good CD and an even better show in Chicago!

Created: 15/04/10
Always heard about this collaboration and I saw the musical in Chicago. Considering this is the only time Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis were ever recorded together and it happened at the beginning of their careers makes this CD a piece of Rock n' Roll history. Sound quality is not great, but the players are and would definitely recommend it to anybody who appreciates this type of music,

Where's Johnny?

If you're an Elvis fan, you'll love this disc. Although it starts a little weak with Christmas song noodling, it does get more interesting. Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee show some good chops but I really had to struggle to pick out any Johnny Cash. Elvis dominates with his singular vocal style but Perkins adds some nice harmonies and second vocal parts. Overall, it's definitely worth a listen if not just for the historical moment.
