Album Notes
Stone Temple Pilots: Weiland (vocals); Dean DeLeo (guitar); Robert DeLeo (bass); Eric Kretz (drums).Recorded at Rumbo Recorders, Los Angeles."Plush" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal."The group that put San Diego, California, on the musical map, Stone Temple Pilots released their debut album with little fanfare, and caught the public eye only after touring for a year. CORE's sound--relentlessly pounding guitars, a heavy bottom, and a singer whose vocal style bled with some unseen pain--played perfectly into the swell of grunge that had been building up in the mainstream for two years before its release. Topically, CORE went beyond the the usual sex, drugs, and rock & roll fare associated with hard rock. The drill-instructor intro that singer Scott Weiland chants at the beginning of "Dead & Bloated" is a disgusted swipe at the rivers of apathy coursing through America. The enigmatic singer often donned a dress onstage to drive home the point of the anti-rape song "Sex Type Thing."Guitarist Dean DeLeo's playing grinds and swirls, pulling the listener to and fro on a crunchy carpet of distortion. Brother Robert's bass rumbles and pops thunderously, as drummer Eric Kretz matches him with unbridled ferocity. STP clicks spectacularly on the consecutive tandem of "Sin" and "Naked Sunday," taking on the political hot-button topic of religion. "Sin" addresses the danger of blind piety that leaves no room for compassion, while "Naked Sunday" deals with the quest for God and the uncertainty of such spiritual pursuits. Pretty heavy stuff for a group presumed to be living the stereotypical rock & roll lifestyle.

A very strong debut.

Created: 20/09/07
This one shows the band at their heaviest, before No.4, that is. It could be comparable to an Alice in Chains album, but is very unique in its own right. "Dead and Bloated" starts it off and just begs to be played LOUD. "Sex Type Thing" is one of the big hits on this one and features some very catchy rhythms. "Creep" is another hit, and is probably one of their all-time biggest songs. Powerful lyrics and singing highlight this song. "Plush" is another excellent song, and my personal favorite. I'm not too sure what it's about, but who cares? This is alternative music, it doesn't have to make sense. I think this is a great debut and features Scott Weiland singing with a harsher voice (he toned it down after a while, especially on Tiny Music...). If you are a fan of alternative, this is a no-doubter.

AWESOME!!!

This is Stone Temple Pilots first CD, and in my opinion one of their best. Although their second effort, Purple is equally stellar, CORE is one hard rocking heartfelt collection of hard driving tunes not to mention forever classic ballads. ("Plush", and the very end of "Sin.") I don't know WHAT they were thinking w/the drivel on the horrendous "Tiny Music from the Vatican Gift Shop" but they came back in a big way w/No. 4. Almost back to full circle to the wondrous Core. This is a must own for every STP/S. Weiland fan.........

There is a lot of great songs and it never gets old listening to. I bought the cd because it had some of the best songs like: dead and bloated, sex type thing, wicked garden, and plush. Great audio quality.

Great Alternative/Grunge Album

Created: 15/11/07
This is perfection when it comes to Grunge. For alternative, I've heard better, but this is still great. In other words, if you like one of the two or both, you will love this album. Never gets old. A solid headbanger, but not so hard it's death metal. There is no yelling nor screaming like your traditional hard rock or metal. Went so perfect. Every track (except for pointless instrumental riff No Memory) is great. 8x platinum stands for itself. Go ahead and buy it if you like Gruge or Alternative. You will not be disapointed.
