Counterfeiting the Holocaust
Created: 06/01/07
This book was written specifically to help people who buy WWII-era Nazi concentration camp and ghetto material avoid buying fakes and post-war creations -- whether for their own collections or for donation to museums or other research facilities. It is bad enough for an honest collector to be ripped off, but when fakes are unknowingly included in research holdings there is a very real danger that future generations of researchers will be misled into accepting them as authentic and the historical record unintentionally falsified.
However, this book is also an invaluable reference for anyone who is interested in the history of Jews in Europe before and during WWII, anyone who is interested in this general area of German history, and specifically for anyone who is interested in the history and operation of the Nazi concentration camps, work camps and ghettos.
The author covers everything from KZL uniforms and armbands to coins and currency in full color and great detail.
The existence of Jewish police units, the Litzmannstadt postage stamps, and the coins and/or currency of Litzmannstadt and Theresienstadt are well known, but Tulkoff provides detailed information on other groups and topics that are much less well known. I have to confess that there were things here that were new to me.
Anyone who plans to write fictional accounts of this period that include scenes in concentration camps, work camps and ghettos should have this book as a reference so that their descriptions of uniforms, armbands, etc., is accurate. NOTHING spoils a historical novel faster than finding errors of fact, incorrect descriptions of one thing or another, and other examples of sloppy research.
This book is excellent, and a welcome well-written addition to the reference materials available on this subject. B E R G E R

FAKE COUNTERFEIT SHOA GHETTO ARMBAND GUIDE
Created: 06/10/07
Synopsis: This book is a reference and resource guide to help determine the authenticity of Holocaust artifacts such as uniforms, arm bands, currency and the like. Provides a detailed look at various Holocaust-related artifacts in a manner that follows the experiences of the survivors and victims. During the past two years, while working at the SHOAH Visual History Foundation as a cataloger, he compiled the information and materials contained in this book. Tulkoff has worked hard in combating the vast amount of Holocaust artifact fraud that has spread in the collecting community and has posted a website dealing with this fraud and also publishes a quarterly newsletter on this topic. I highly recommend this book to all persons interested in the Shoa and interested in collecting these important pieces of history!
