Album Notes
Initial pressings featured a limited edition, cardboard-stock gatefold sleeve and unpublished archive photos.King Crimson: Greg Lake (vocals, bass); Robert Fripp (guitar); Ian McDonald (flute, clarinet, saxophones, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Giles (drums); Peter Sinfield.Personnel: Ian McDonald (vocals, reeds, woodwinds, Mellotron, keyboards, vibraphone); Greg Lake (vocals, electric bass); Michael Giles (vocals, drums, percussion); Peter Sinfield (spoken vocals); Robert Fripp (guitars). The group's definitive album, and one of the most daring debut albums ever recorded by anybody. At the time, it blew all of the progressive/psychedelic competition (the Moody Blues, the Nice, etc.) out of the running, although it was almost too good for the band's own good -- it took King Crimson nearly four years to come up with a record as strong or concise. Ian McDonald's Mellotron is the dominant instrument, along with his saxes and Fripp's guitar, making this a somewhat different-sounding record from everything else they ever did. And even though that Mellotron sound is muted and toned down compared to their concert work of the era (e.g., Epitaph), it is still fierce and overpowering, on an album highlighted by strong songwriting (most of it filled with dark and doom-laden visions), the strongest singing of Greg Lake's entire career, and Fripp's guitar playing that strangely mixed elegant classical, Hendrix-like rock explosions, and jazz noodling. Lineup changes commenced immediately upon the album's release, and Fripp would ultimately be the only survivor on later King Crimson records. ~ Bruce Eder

Editorial Reviews
From baroque ballads to avant-garde heavy metal, Crimson's debut sounded unlike anything else before or since.
Q

4 stars out of 5 - ...this 1969 album's manic energy and compressed imagery captures the violent downside of the hippy years...better than almost any other recording from the time...

Satisfying Musical Experience

Created: 24/01/10
I was recommended this album by the sheer fact that it was so hyped on an internet forum I frequent. And although the hype was a bit overwhelming and somewhat soured the album, the album was at least still a satisfying experience.

Most will know this album by it's first track, 21st Century Schizoid Man, which made an appearance in I believe Guitar Hero: World Tour. While it is still a good song it really only scratches the surface of this album, and for that matter, the rest of King Crimson's discography. While Schizoid Man is dirty, grungy and thumping accompanied by a whole bunch of groove, songs like Epitaph and the title track balance the track with sweeping epic riffs. I Talk to the Wind is a very calming song which also counter-balances the hard riffs of 21st Century, and Moon Child is a very quirky and fun song that had me laughing at it's upbeat and gay bursts of music in the second half of the song.

It's also substantially obvious that the band's members are defiantly worthy of their chops as their leads, fills, and addition of Xylophones, woodwinds and Brass add a mesmerizing supplementary layer to all the songs.

Overall it was an interesting album and easily an influential album for a wide range of bands to succeed them. I'd probably buy it again.

Fantasstic release from back in the day

What musicianship and creativity! Why can't today's musicians come anywhere close to this quality? I think it is because they lack the virtuosity we used to admire and expect. Needless to say, this is a prime example of true musical talent and ability. Listening to it transports me to a better place.
