Movie synopsis

Renny Harlin (DIE HARD 2, DEEP BLUE SEA) directs this supernatural thriller about descendants of powerful New England families. The sons of Ipswich are legendary at Spenser Academy, the local boarding school. Handsome and popular, these four teenage friends can trace their roots to the founding families of the Ipswich Colony, settled in the late 1600s. For years these Massachusetts families have harbored the secret that they possess supernatural powers. Their descendants--Caleb (Steven Strait), Reid (Toby Hemingway), Tyler (Chace Crawford), and Pogue (Taylor Kitsch)--have inherited magical powers that first manifested themselves when the boys turned 13 years old. In a nutshell, they can do anything. As they approach their 18th birthdays, they are preparing to "ascend," which means their powers will grow stronger. The downside? The magic is seductive and addictive, and causes premature aging with each use. Ringleader Caleb tries to keep his friends from using magic recklessly, but as the school year begins, strange events and a strong gut instinct convince Caleb that someone is using very powerful magic. Meanwhile, Caleb is exploring his newfound affection for transfer student Sarah (Laura Ramsey). To Caleb's dismay, Sarah becomes a pawn in a power struggle with a descendant of the fifth founding family of Ipswich, a line thought to be lost during Salem's witch trials. Is Caleb strong enough to maintain his power and keep his family and friends safe, or will he yield to this new threat and sacrifice himself? The film draws interesting parallels between the luring, addictive power of magic and the addictions real teenagers face. The sufficiently creepy setting echoes New England and sets the stage for supernatural phenomena. THE COVENANT also stars Sebastian Stan as Chase Collins, a wealthy newcomer to Spenser, and Jessica Lucas as Kate, Sarah's roommate and Pogue's girlfriend.

Well, like any good fictional piece, the movie establishes the basic "rules" of the Supernatural elements involved. The first is that their powers are not supposed to be used openly, the second that they aren't supposed to talk about them, the third that they have limits based on relative strengths, and the fourth being that on their eighteenth birthdays, they become much stronger. Since each in the group is almost at that magic age (pun intended), they are like most other teens in their desire to become free of their relative shackles of youth (the obvious metaphor being they will be on their own, out to make their destiny with the rest of the universe). This comparison seems natural and one of the main points in the otherwise pointless movie, giving the audience some insight into their own lives by virtue of the ramped up abilities of the four teens, right?

The random tattoos on her back didn't bother me at all.
The quartet of teens is shown to be like most others their age, abusing their abilities in nonchalant fashion, to outwit the police, lift up skirts, win at pool, and win in athletic competitions. That they are already the pretty boy athlete types who mostly come off as jerks is beside the point, the likelihood that swooning females watching them will care about the principles of how they get what they want escaping the infatuated ladies somehow. This sets up the responsibilities and downside of using the gifts frivolously. Essentially changing the focus midstream to show the magical abilities like a drug, with addiction and side effects in abundance, director Renny Harlin once more goes to the well of the improbable and drinks too deeply. See, the more you use the powers, the faster you age and the more you want to use your abilities. This is a plot point you can see for yourself in one of the tragic surprises of the flick, yet the one teen with the smarts to know what will happen repeatedly uses his powers like they were going out of style (hastening his doom to match his father).
The main aspect of the movie focuses on the belief that a fifth family, one thought to be wiped out hundreds of years prior, was still in existence in the form of a newcomer. Forget the fact that there could be thousands of other witches, warlocks, and other supernatural beings out there seeking to attack our protagonists for a moment and think about the idea; the banished (and thought long dead) fifth founding family waited all this time to enact revenge?!? Okay, maybe if the writers had thought up a reason why this would be and presented it with a degree of intelligence, I could have accepted it. That he would be so much more skilled in the use and somehow escape the notice of the others in the community (while the focus was the teens, most of their families were still alive and, theoretically at least, magically gifted to the point where they could have teamed up to do something about him. The whole idea of sticking together (hence the title again) for mutual protection was tossed out the window and it came down to devolving into yet another excuse to show the latest special effects in a date movie.

The covenant is an amazing film about four boys with powers who end up going to Spencer for school and they are trying to deal with living a normal life and not only having powers but just dealing with school life, love and friendships.I think this film is amazing and the story line is brilliant. Most of all the young talents are great.Steven strait undiscovered and Sky high shines as Caleb the lead in the cast and head of the Covenant.

The rest of the cast is beyond amazing and they are all going to have bright futures in acting. Please buy this movie. You will love it.It's a stylish horror film and greatly acted.

A true let down of movie

Created: 01/06/07
The previews for this movie made it look like it would be an excellent movie. I guess movies shouldn't always be judged by their trailers. The Covenant is about a group of boys with powers that allow them to take advantage of those around them, but not without a price. The more power they use, the more their lives are shortened. But it isn't until a mysterious new kid shows up that things get....melodramatic. This movie is a skeleton of what it could have been. Even the cool graphics, interesting plotline, and tight soundtrack are not enough to make this a must-see film. So here's my review broken down.

Plot: 3.5/5
Characters: 3/5
Music: 4/5
Visual Effects: 4/5
Action: 2/5

Overall this movie gets a 3/5. Because even though it looks and sounds nice, it's just not worth buying.

The Covenant is a great movie. I love the story behind it and all of the actors and actresses that play in it. It is about four young guys who have supernatural powers and have to do with the consequences of using them. Steven Strait did an excellent job portaying the main character. It is a great all around movie for someone who likes action or thriller movies.

IS THIS MOVIE RIGHT FOR YOU TOBUY OR RENT?

Created: 06/01/07
covenant is about four boys had powers to use magic. Each time they used there power it drain their life forces alway. They have to deal with alot of things in life just as we do and + that they have to hide their power form every one they know (just like super man.)

The movie is between drama and scfi-action. There is alot of talking need more action I think! In over well the movie is will made to tell about how they got there power and why they have to hide it from people. I am not tell how got it and why they have to hide it from people because it is the base of the movie. if you want to find out see this movie!

If you like power and magic buy this movie it very good to see. It cost around $15-$20 dollar to buy. AS the time go by it will fell between $5-10
dallor. If you have that much money than buy it, people do all the time even me sometime.

If you just want to rent the movie it is a good idea because it cheap that why and when the time go by the price for the movie will drop very low just as the other movies that come out.

Thanks for reading this!!
