From the Elmore James-styled slide grunge that heralds Leroy Carr's classic "Blues Before Sunrise," to his sweet, pearly tones on an agonizingly slow "Third Degree," it's clear that FROM THE CRADLE really is your parents' Eric Clapton.Nearly every album Clapton's ever done has had a suggestion of his roots. But there's more than a suggestion of blues on impassioned, unhinged solos like "Five Long Years," "It Hurts Me Too" and "Someday After A While"--Clapton betrays a childlike pleasure in coming out from behind his pop persona, and the joy is infectious. That's because FROM THE CRADLE is recorded live...that is to say, everyone at once, with no instrumental or vocal overdubs (save for the sweet dobro obbligatos on an old-timey sounding "How Long Blues"). The slower tempos, like a lowdown "Sinner's Prayer" and the acoustic "Driftin'" really showcase his growth as a vocalist (particularly that bullfrog groan, by way of Muddy Waters, whom he honors with an especially faithful cover of "Standin' Round Crying"). And when Clapton leaves Earth orbit on Willie Dixon's "Groaning The Blues," you get the feeling Eric may never leave the blues again. More, please.

Editorial Reviews
4.5 Stars - Very Good Plus - ...His passion seems authentic, unrehearsed, and there's a sort of moral earnestness to his plea for romantic reconciliation...his struggle with loneliness...and his soul-wrenching rejection of sadness....Clapton's slide guitar explodes ...like the Second Coming of Elmore James...
Down Beat (19941201)

3 Stars - Good - ...The playing is impeccable and Clapton's voice...remains a thing of affecting simplicity...
Q (19941001)

4 Stars - Excellent - ...This is the plugged-in, all-blues album that old school Clapton freaks have been moaning and groaning for ever since the guitarist gave his two weeks' notice to John Mayall in July 1966...

Clapton at his best

Created: 08/05/08
This is Clapton at the absolute top of his game. A few short years after getting clean and sober for good, Eric delivers what I believe is the best guitar work of his career. What really makes this different from his previous work is the emotion with which he delivers the vocals. He gets back to his roots in the blues, and plays it the way he plays it best: live.

Review of 'From the Cradle' by Eric Clapton

Created: 23/11/08
If you've never heard Clapton then you live on another planet where there is no access to Earth media. While he is certainly NOT the God he was once touted to be, he is, without doubt, one of the finest practioners of the blues around right now and has been for many years. This album, 'From the Cradle', finds Eric in excellent form both vocally and instrumentally. He is backed by a crack group of musicians. This is an excellent album and a must have for 'Blues aficionados' (hey...did I spell that right? Yes I did).

Outstanding Performance on Every Song!!!

Created: 08/05/10
It's funny, but I could really care less for Clapton's rock stuff. But I feel his blues playing and his interpretations of these blues cuts is way above average. Every track is superb. The blues are easy to play, but the blues are hard to feel. You can tell Clapton loves this music and he's been feeling the blues for a long time. Highly recommended.

Eric excels at making the pure blues album

I never get tired of this artist's interpretation of old blues material. If you like to listen to the blues and mix up the downer songs with the uplifting ones, this is for you. I also recommend you listen to "Me and Mr. Johnson". His guitar prowess is a given, but his vocal style just keeps getting better, and his choice of backup band is always excellent.

From the Cradle - Eric Clapton

Created: 13/06/06
Eric Clapton is one white boy who can really bring the raw blues straight out of the deep South. No tricks or frills here, just gutsy and powerful blues. Clapton goes way back to his roots (to the cradle)and rips off some great blues.

If you're looking for smooth blues, polished up in the sound room, buy Clapton's more commercially successful "Me and Mr. Johnson." But if you want to hear ow he got there...put on your Bose headphones, turn it up, and sink into the Mississippi Delta -- raw blues!!
