What a blending of stories!
Created: 01/03/10
I have to watch a movie at least 2 times to form an opinion. After watching Cranford twice, I have decided that it is one of my favorites. It is a blending of several Gaskell story lines woven together into a delightful tale of the people of Cranford, who are kind and good but set firmly in their ways. This movie is so well acted and so funny (especially the character Miss Pole) It's long, but definitely worth the time. I always watch British movies with the subtitles the first time so that I understand all that is said and can follow the story better. Then I watch it a 2nd time for pure enjoyment!

Charming period piece will capture your heart!

Delightfully humorous & touching tale of Cranford, a picturesque English village whose matrons keep close tabs on all the doings and set the bar for the standards and practices of the community. Based on a series of shorts by Elizabeth Gaskell, the wonderfully intimate sets and richly textured script bring the story to life in a much more satisfying way than the original. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll give your heart to the charmingly flawed but deeply compassionate and fiercely loyal denizens of Cranford. Enjoy!

Excellence Personified

As with all BBC versions which I simply must own, one expects and does usually receive excellence. Cranford is no exception. Stellar performances by all with emphasis on Judi Dench and Francesca Annis. Suburb.
Based on the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, the literary genre is very similar to Jane Austen. Ms. Gaskell is well known for her biography of Charlotte Bronte.

New British Classic
Created: 08/01/09
My sister recommended this for my mom for christmas. I have seen 3 of the episodes now and they are great. If you love the british classic drama/romance then this is for you. It has the feel of a Jane Austin, but you really get in tune with the rigors of the society rules and regulations in this one. Cant wait to see all the episodes.

I loved Cranford!
Created: 07/11/08
I had seen it before when I rented it from Netflix and decided I just HAD to have it! I just feel in love with the characters and was truly engrossed in the film. I couldn't wait for the next episode! It was one of those kinds of movies that I didn't want to end. The way it was written, they could easily make a Cranford II.It had it's happy parts, and it's sad parts. It could be watched by the whole family. It was a clean movie, with no cursing, vulgarity, sex, or killing. I reccommend it to all.
