Album Notes
Dave Matthews Band: David Matthews (vocals, acoustic guitar); Boyd Tinsley (violin, electric violin); Leroi Moore (alto, soprano, tenor & baritone saxophones, flute, whistle); Stefan Lessard (bass, tac piano); Carter Beauford (drums, percussion, background vocals).Additional personnel: Tim Reynolds (acoustic & electric guitars).Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York and Green Street Recording Studios, New York, New York."So Much To Say" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. CRASH was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rock Album, and "Too Much" was nominated for Best Rock Song. "Crash Into Me" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song. What is it about The Dave Matthews Band that makes them so eclectic yet cohesive, so conventionally unconventional? The answer may lie in Matthews' rangy, distinctive voice and his capable acoustic-guitar work, which keeps the music centered as the band pulls from a myriad of musical styles. In fact, the music often seems to mimic his singing, following him from gruff and gravelly to pleading and sweet. The players, clearly comfortable with each other, shift effortlessly through funk, rock, jazz and folk, much as on their 1994 breakthrough, UNDER THE TABLE AND DREAMING. Like that one, CRASH is rich and heavy with complex textures and rhythm, and accessible all the same.Personnel: Dave Matthews (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar); Tim Reynolds (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Boyd Tinsley (violin, electric violin); LeRoi Moore (flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Stefan Lessard (piano); Carter Beauford (drums, percussion, background vocals).Audio Mixers: Alex U. Case; Steve Lillywhite; Tom Lord-Alge.Recording information: Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, NY; Green Street Recording Studios, New York, NY.Photographer: C. Taylor Crothers.Unknown Contributor Role: John Alagia.CRASH makes good on the promise of the Dave Matthews Band's major-label debut, UNDER THE TABLE & DREAMING, by delivering more of the jazzy, funky folk-tinged rock that made that album a popular breakthrough. On CRASH, the spotlight is again on Matthews's literate, adventurous songwriting, which bears the influences of Afrobeat ("Say Goodbye"), Tropicalia ("Let You Down"), and music from the Balkans ("Two Step"). Matthews blends these diverse styles on a singer/songwriter palette with loose, appealing melodies and intricate, rhythmic guitar lines, making the songs on CRASH even better than those on its predecessor.Much of the charm of Matthews's music comes from his band, with their unique (for modern rock) instrumentation (including violin and saxophone), meticulous arrangements, and notably superior musicianship. Another of the group's stylistic angles is 1970s funk, and the ensemble channels this influence overtly on the punchy, horn-driven "Too Much," and implicitly elsewhere (even the acoustic numbers seem to pop and snap intensely). With Matthews's associative lyrics and distinctive, sliding tenor over the top, all this adds up to an original and undeniably winning record.

Editorial Reviews
4 Stars - Excellent - ...equal parts originality and willful complication....Although the band's determinedly jammy methods do lead them away from their songs at times, almost every track of CRASH is at least `good in parts'...

...one of the nicest things about DMB's music is that its distinctive complexity serves as a virtual assurance against a flood of lame imitator bands. - Rating: B+

Well worth owning! This is a keeper for the collection!

The only Dave Matthews I had ever listened to was on the radio. I found this CD at a yard sale for $1.00 and decided what the hell. It's only a buck. It was $1.00 very well spent. The entire albun ROCKS! I like every song on the album. I soon got hooked on Dave Matthews. My girlfriend is also a fan now. I found myself looking on eBay for MORE Dave Matthews Band CDs. I am happy with them as well. THEN I found myself going to his concerts. Which by-the-way sell out FAST! His band is VERY TIGHT. They put on a helluva show for about 3 hours. You just can't beat his subtle weirdnesses, his quirky lyrical style and the bands talent. When I went to see him LIVE at the Ford Amphitheater in Tampa Florida, the vioin player broke a string in his violin while performing and just kept on playing the whole song without ever missing a note. Don't ask me how. It just happened. The show did not lack any lustre. THe band kept playing and sounding great as if nothing happened. Many songs from this album were performed live that night. They ALL sounded as good as hearing it from the album. I plan to buy more albums in the future. And seeing as many Dave Matthews shows as I can. I recommend you do the same. It makes for GREAT traveling music or justa loungin' around the house with a cold one. JAM OUT & ENJOY! His albums SERIOUSLY ROCK!

If you could only pick 1 Dave CD to own, this is it

This is the ultimate CD for the collection in that EVERY song is a good song. It's a timeless CD that is sure to be a favorite in anyone's collection. What makes it so good? It's a great CD for chilling out ~ a mix of hard and soft tunes, deep thinkers, and awesome guitar. It's like candy for your ears. I'm sure this is on a list of all-time BEST CD's but it really is going to be a classic someday. If you've heard Dave on the radio, you've probably heard Crash and some other over played radio songs, however the CRASH cd is completely different. The songs are original and complex, full of highs and lows... the perfect CD for in front of the fire or a warm summer night. I would recommend this CD for anyone that is sick of the same hum-drum music that is out there.

Wonderful album

Created: 20/05/06
After several years together, DMB hits the nail on the head with this one. Improvisation abounds with tenor sax, violin, and Dave Matthew's own horn-like voice. Although most tracks consist of fairly simple chords and harmonies, the addition of a sax and violin sets them apart from most other rock bands and Carter Beauford's drum stylings build solo sections and interludes to a great climaxes. One of the best live acts around!

one of my favorite Dave albums. a treat for your ears

Created: 05/11/06
This is one of those cds that you have and love to drive to or just play while you're wanting to relax. If no one's ever heard Dave Matthews, It is a great way to introduce the music. My first Dave album was under the table and dreaming, but I equally enjoy and appreciate all music by Dave Matthews and the other incredibly talented members in his band. Just beautiful, groovin music. This is the second time i've bought this cd. My other one was played to death.
