Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Blu-ray Disc, 2007)

Ang Lee, Yun-Fat Chow, Michelle Khan|Theatrical release: 1999 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Known for making films about familial relationships, director Ang Lee surprised everyone with his martial arts epic CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Based on a novel by Wang Du Lu, CROUCHING TIGER starts with the revenge plot common in the wuxia stories that Lee loved as a child, then adds a feminist twist. Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) is a legendary martial artist who has decided to pass on his sword, the Green Destiny, to a friend. Soon afterward, the sword is stolen by a masked female, setting in motion events that test the bonds of family, love, duty, and sisterhood. Chow appears with three generations of female stars: Cheng Pei Pei, a 1960s action heroine; Michelle Yeoh, the beauty queen turned 1980s action goddess; and newcomer Zhang Ziyi, who smolders as the princess who wants more than domestic tranquillity. Famed action choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (THE MATRIX) stages jaw-dropping zero-G fights across rooftops, rivers, and bamboo trees, while Yo-Yo Ma punctuates the fisticuffs with dramatic cello solos. Described by Lee as "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY with martial arts," CROUCHING TIGER recalls the best wuxia films of the 1960s and pushes the genre in new directions.

Wang Du Lu wrote the novel upon which "Crouching Tiger..." is based. The story goes like this:

Two martial arts warrior masters, Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) & a beauty queen, who becomes an action goddess of the 1980's (Michelle Yeoh) must face their greatest challenge when the precious "Green Destiny" sword is stolen. As young aristocrat, Zhang Ziyi, prepares for an arranged marriage, she reveals by becoming a talented fighter, that she desires much more than a domestic lifestyle. This film earns its Oscar for Best Picture~ch warrior fights for justice. They include 3 generations of Chinese female stars. This film is set in the 19th century, in China. The panoramic cinematography of the landscape is absolutely breathtaking. From the acclaimed direction of Ang Lee to the amazing action-oriented choreography of Yuen Woo-Ping, one of the most awe inspiring action staged films is created. Believe me, this film doesn't depend upon the Chinese landscape on the ground! The action takes flight in more ways than merely martial arts choreography. The passion in the film is nearly its equal~

I came very close to scoring this a 5star movie. This is a wonderfull mix of martial arts, and a strong story line. Its character details are very indept. The martial arts fight scenes are ground breaking, its truely a work of art. This is one of my all time favorite "fighting" movies. Its not a cheesy action packed from the time you hit play, with endless battles that mean nothening. Instead, each fight seems to help you understand the character, and keeps building up momentum threw out this movie. Its a bit long, but hey thats just more movie for you money. My offical score is 4.75stars. Hope you enjoy

A good narrative that uses drama to tell a story, beneath the rich colors and the martial arts is actually a theme not everyone will pick up during watching the movie. The visuals only convey a deeper theme. Although, this film is just among dozens of films that were released in that time period in China, so this movie is not considered a 'foreign film' per se.
