Movie synopsis

CROUPIER tells the complex story of an aspiring writer who must take a job in order to pay the bills. Experienced as a professional croupier, Jack Manfred (Clive Owen) is hired by an upscale casino in London, where he intends to silently observe the goings on while continuing to work on his latest novel. Tensions begin to emerge between Jack and his girlfriend, Marion (Gina McKee), when he finds himself succumbing to the temptations that the gambling world presents; most notably, the gorgeous Jani (Alex Kingston), whose mysterious intentions eventually make themselves clear. As the story unfolds, Jack begins to realize that he is becoming the immoral hero of his novel, and is, in fact, giving in to these temptations to provide him with subject matter that will make for a memorable work of fiction.Mike Hodges and Paul Mayersberg have crafted a taut thriller that keeps the twists unfolding until the film's very last shot. As a tribute to Mayersberg's script, Hodges insisted that he share the film's author credit with the scribe. This unprecedented decision, combined with Clive Owen's seductive, highly irresistible performance, results in a motion picture that is an intelligent throwback to the crime films of yesteryear.

Croupier (2004, DVD)

Watching the movie Croupier is like watching a mix between a Raymond Chandler movie and a darkened, windowless Casino. It brings a certain sophistication to the voiceover concept in movies. It also has Clive Owen as the lead and who wouldn't want that! The protaganist in the movie is complicated as so many are. One of the unique differences is that he's got a unique twist to his compulsivities. He's a croupier in a casino in South Africa, then London and a writer. The voiceover is almost the novel he's been trying to write. His twist is not something you might initially think. He's not a druggy or a gambler. Rather, he's hooked on reading people. The signals they give out, their vibe. He's gotten so attuned to reading people he can tell if they're cheating, if they're bluffing, and so on.

As you can figure, this causes the lead some problems among others. The movie is a good mystery yarn with a character flawed, but essentially good. The Maltese Falcon comes to mind.

This is the first movie that I saw with Clive Owen. He chooses some diverse films. Another good one is I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, but that's for another review ...

Clive Owen once again shows he has more talent than just for dramatic roles. It was a bizarre concept but Owen definitely took the reins with his new job as croupier. The expertise at the blackjack table just showed me all the more reason why I don't gamble except on movies. This was a winner even though it may not have made much of a win at the box office.

Clive Owen always is true to his character in all of his movies. Croupier denotes a dramatic storyline - great screenplay - and if you like a casino-flavor - this is the movie for you!
