Cry Baby = Grease, Not Much Different
Created: 04/06/09
Although John Waters, the director of Cry-Baby, has a reputation for shocking and disgusting scenes, I was surprised to find that CRY-BABY's plot is virtually identical to that of GREASE. Both are set in the 1950s. In both, a leather-jacketed high school bad boy and a square girl fall in love, and after numerous musical numbers it is the girl who has to have a make-over, looking and acting "bad" in order to keep the boy's love. John Waters goes a bit more over-the-top (in Grease, Rizzo only THINKS she's pregnant; in CRY-BABY, Ricki Lake's character has two out-of-wedlock children & is pregnant with a third). CRY-BABY also has a French kissing scene that is pretty gross, even if you like tongue. Both films have some stunt casting, a drag race, and memorable songs. If you like Grease, Cry-Baby is worth a look. A young Johnny Depp in the leading role is sizzling hot!

Must See Over and Over!

I love this movie so much! Its stars Johnny Depp but has tons of other peoples you might know like Ricky Lake, Iggy Pop, Traci Lords and more! Great story line and the singing is wonderful! Not your normal high school teen movie. Great jokes throughout the whole movie. And you get to see Johnny Depp in his tighty whities! Must see for any Johnny Depp fan!!

AH....JOHNNY DEPP

You know, Johnny Depp is such a great talent, and he shines in anything he takes on. John Waters is...well, John Waters. You either love his movies or hate them. I personally love them. There is always a commentary and a lot of nostalgia, and Cry Baby is no exception.
Juvenille delinguent teenagers are the fodder of thousands of movie makers, but add Depp, and Tracy Lords, with music, and you have a real camp classic on your hands! This is a crystal clear transfer, and Depp can sing just as well as he did in Sweeney Todd. All the other characters are exactly that...charaters. And if you are into the fifties nostalgia, this is true inexpensive magic.
Ricki Lake was a bit heavier in this Waters film, and many "boomers" will remember Polly Bergan from early TV days. So sit back and prepare to have a real hoot with Cry Baby!

Cry-Baby (DVD, 2005, Director's Cut)

A wonderfully fun and odd assortment of characters that is quite easy and enjoyable to watch. Whether you just like Johnny Depp or maybe you like Iggy Pop more. You will be happy to know that they both play a substancial role in this movie! Ricki Lake provides some fun but not as much as mainstream Traci Lords.

This is a great movie! I was flipping through channels when i came upon this movie and have been hooked ever since. Johnny Depp is a great actor (and cute) as he plays a teen from the wrong side of the tracks who falls for a society rich girl. Tv had cut alot of stuff out and the VHS I had didn't even show everthing. This one had everything except the "Chicken" song that TV will show. My only regret is that there is no full screen option.
If you like off the wall musicals (cuz some of the scenes are so corny they're funny), you should check this out!
