Curious George (DVD, 2006, Anamorphic Widescreen)

Jun Falkenstein, Will Ferrell, Joan Plowright|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: G (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 6, 2005Will Ferrell voices the Man in the Yellow Hat in this animated version of the beloved children's book CURIOUS GEORGE. The story of the world's snoopiest primate also features the voice work of Joan Plowright, David Cross, Eugene Levy, and Drew Barrymore., Resisting the temptations that so many recent kids' movies have succumbed to, CURIOUS GEORGE stays true to the innocently playful spirit of the beloved, brilliantly simple children's books by H.A. Rey, eschewing ironic asides, gross-out comedy, and pop culture references. Barely acknowledging the parents and guardians in the audience, the filmmakers talk directly--and effectively--to their target viewers: young children. And much like the tone and story it complements, the bright and colorful animation is distinctly old-fashioned, paying tribute to the books, appealing to kids, and adding to the movie's retro charms. In the film, the Man in the Yellow Hat (now named Ted) is a geeky museum guide, winningly voiced by Will Ferrell, whose relatively restrained performance here is actually less cartoonish than many of his previous flesh-and-blood roles. He travels to Africa in an attempt to obtain a huge ancient ruin that could save his struggling museum, which the owner's son (the inherently funny David Cross) wants to turn into a more-profitable parking lot. Instead, of course, Ted brings back an adorable, mischievous, childlike monkey (fortunately, George doesn't talk, though his primate chatter is quite expressive), who inadvertently causes all kinds of trouble for him--though there's never much doubt that everything will work out for the best in the end. With the talented voice acting (which also includes Dick Van Dyke, Joan Plowright, and Drew Barrymore as Ted's sweet schoolteacher love interest), the appropriately fun and laid-back music by Jack Johnson, the irresistibly likable character of George himself, and the wisely uncluttered plot, first-time feature director Matthew O'Callaghan achieves the rare feat of successfully and respectfully adapting one of the most popular children's books of all time.

This is How its Supposed to Be

This is a must see with the kids. The family saw this one at the theatre and now we own the DVD. The kids will love George's silly antics, which always gets him into trouble, but also brings out the best in Ted, the man with the yellow hat, when Ted comes to save him. At one point, Ted realizes just how much he is missing in his life without George, and this brings his life to a slow crawl until he can find him again. This movie makes one think just how we spend the precious little time we have with our children and how if we can get out of our adult world of thinking, and be present with our kids, we can get closer to them...In the words of Jack Johnson, "This is how its supposed to be..."

KIDS CAN STILL BE CURIOUS AND BE KIDS

I THINK THIS IS A WONDERFUL LITTLE MOVIE. KIDS CAN HAVE A GOOD TIME WATCHING AN INNOCENT LITTLE MONKEY GETTING INTO TROUBLE BUT KNOWING THAT WHAT HE IS DOING IS WRONG. I THINK IT TEACHES CHILDREN THAT SOME OF THINGS YOU MAY DO LOOK LIKE FUN BUT IT IS STILL WRONG TO DO THEM. I HAVE ALWAYS INCOURAGE MY CHILDREN TO WATCH CURIOUS GEORGE. I THINK HE TEACHES MORALS THAT OUR KIDS ARE NO LONGER TAUGHT. THE MAN WITH THE HAT HANDLES THE LITTLE MONKEY WITH SUCH COMPASSION. THIS IS WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS TO SEE AND DO. WE ALL DO WRONG AT SOME POINT OF TIME, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN TO TEACH HATE JUST BECAUSE WE DO. MY DAUGHTER HAS ALL OF THE CURIOUS GEORGE MOVIES AND BOOKS.

Must have for kids of all ages!!!

I grew up watching Curious George and find myself reminiscing when I watch this - you can even catch that childish smile on my face. Jack Johnson lends an excellent soundtrack to Curious George and Will Ferrell's "man in the yellow hat". I am happy this holiday season to be passing on this movie to my two year old neice as she reacts to the music, bright colors and pulls of emotion in this classic come to modern day life.

Good; but maybe a little too modern

Created: 07/03/07
Great story with cool music from Jack Johnson. The movie strays a little from the TV series and the books that your children may be used to. Also, seems there was something lost (maybe something gained) by giving a name to "the man with the yellow hat" and mocking the yellow outfit. By doing so, it seems to lose some of the inocence of the 40s and 50s (when the books were in their prime) and which is appealing to kids and parents alike in these modern days.

I remember always bringing home Curious George books when I was in 2nd grade. This movie is just so cute and adorable and perfect for little kids. It is funny and sad and adventurous and sweet. I was so happy to finally find out the name of the man in the yellow hat! I love all the colors that were used in this movie.
