    Album Notes
Personnel: John Frusciante (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, melodica, piano, Mellotron, synthesizer, electric bass); John Frusciante (strings, bass guitar); Ken Wild (double bass, upright bass); Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (guitar); Carla Azar (drums).Audio Mixers: Ryan Hewitt; Chris Holmes .Recording information: 05/08/2004-05/23/2004.The sixth of six albums recorded by Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante during 2004, Curtains was initially tracked on the musician's living room floor and subsequently overdubbed with Carla Azar of Autolux on drums, Ken Wylde on upright bass, and Omar Rodriguez of the Mars Volta, who lent his guitar playing to a pair of tracks. Initiated by the stellar, Dylanesque acoustic tones of "The Past Recedes," Curtains opens to reveal evocative, soulful material like "Lever Pulled" and the bright, melodic reflection known as "A Name." The magical "Ascension -- which uses George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" as a touchstone -- offsets the piano dirge "Leap Your Bar," but Frusciante's increasing comfort as a vocalist during this prolific spell is what is most notable. One needs to look no further than the beauty of "Anne" (which is arguably the best of the lot here) for evidence. But Curtains is the sum of its parts. Nearly always inventive, the 11 tunes here collect to form one magnificent piece of art. ~ John D. Luerssen

A solid effort from an amazing musician!

    Created: 11/10/07
John's sixth solo album in sixth months in the year 2004 does not dissapoint. In fact, it is my probably my favorite of the six he realeased. While I go back and forth between "Curtains" and "Shadows Collide With People" for favoritism, this album generally gets the nod because it is so raw. Most of the tracks are just John and his guitar, which gives the album a very contemplative and pensive feel. Fans of Frusciante's fast and aggressive style that is characteristic of his playing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be surprised as none of the tracks are funky or in your face. However, this album really showcases John's vocals as a soloist (the tracked backgrounds are incredible) and his ability to write. I like to think that he just sat down one day with his guitar and recorded what was on his mind and made it into an album (hence the raw feeling I hear). If you are not looking to buy the album immeadiately, good sample tracks to get would be "Anne", "The Real", "The Past Recedes" and "Ascenscion". I never liked his solo stuff at first, and you may not either on first listen. But give it some time and these will really grow on you. If you are looking for a solo effort by John that is more rock, check out "Shadows Collide With People." This is a studio album and features Chad Smith (the drummer for the Peppers) in it and has less of a folk feeling than this album.

I've been a fan of all of john's music. This is the second album that I bought of his solo album.(the first being Shadows collide with people) This album is a little less "pop" accessible, but is still super narly album. It may take a few run throughs for somebody who hasn't listened to listened to this type of music, but once you get used to it you'll find it pretty cool. If you're a fan of John's music or lo-fi in general you'll love it instantly.
