CURVES OF LIVE is the result of inspired commingling of hard funk (Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament, Ohio Players), bebop (a cover of Thelonious Monk's classic "'Round Midnight"), edgy free jazz (avant tenor titan David Murray guests on two tunes), and rap. Coleman wails with a tart, lithe tone betraying the influences of Ornette Coleman, Phil Woods, and Maceo Parker.
Editorial Reviews...Coleman has proven that it is possible to play fresh music that relates to the street while keeping harmonic and rhythmic sophistication....Coleman adds twisting, abstract lines that whip through the ensemble like a controlled storm...Option (19960901)...catches the avant-funk pioneer live and burning....Listening to a Coleman solo is like watching someone breeze through a video game obstacle course, or watching Barry Sanders do one of those reverse-your-field, mess with everybody's head gridiron improvs...JazzTimes (19960901)4 Stars - Very Good - ...because it's recorded live, there's a palpable esprit de corps at work that gives the stuff an extraordinary shimmer....the main thrust of Coleman's...esthetic becomes obvious: how the flow of sound...is inextricably linked to the rhythmic inflections surrounding it. In this band, everybody's a percussionist.Down Beat (19960901)4 (out of 5) - ...it's a freer and less contrived sound, and Coleman has developed considerably. Here, he's rattling off gripping, high-energy solos with an eye-watering virtuosity, proving himself, without doubt, one of the most gifted improvisers of his generation...Q (19961201)eBay Product ID: EPID3205926
