Jane Campion, Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo|Theatrical release: 2003 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

The acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (THE PIANO) turns her unusual artistic eye toward the urban erotic thriller genre. Based on the novel by Susanna Moore, IN THE CUT tells the story of Frannie (Meg Ryan) an English teacher living in Manhattan's East Village who finds herself mixed up in a homicide investigation after a severed head turns up in her garden. Jennifer Jason Leigh is her sexually unhinged half-sister and Mark Ruffalo plays a homicide detective who falls into bed with Frannie after she's attacked on the Lower East Side. Suspects include her stalker ex-lover (Kevin Bacon) and a troubled student (Sharrieff Pugh) who's obsessed with serial killer John Wayne Gacy. As the body count rises however, Frannie realizes that the prime suspect just may be the very cop in her bed. If this all sounds like a by-the-numbers sex crime thriller don't worry; Campion twists the genre towards her own ends, adding multi-layered focus, deeply saturated colors, a dream-like mood and copious amounts of feminist allegorical symbolism. Meg Ryan fans should be shocked by her performance here (replete with several nude scenes), which is a major departure from her usual cute characterizations. Nicole Kidman, who starred in Campion's PORTRAIT OF A LADY served as producer. Fans of that film, and Campion's work in general, should enjoy the perverse psychosexual theatrics on display in this grim urban fairy tale.

Dark, Demur, Mysterious, Captivating: In The Cut

Created: 07/03/07
"In The Cut" is a film that captures the darker side of humanity. Subtle sinister innuendos shadow each character and force the viewer to suspect any one of them as the murderous "disarticulator." Mark Rufalo has taken a role unlike any other he's played before, an abrasive, sexually enticing, NY investigator, who takes interest in a potential witness, Meg Ryan. Ryan plays a high school english teacher who sees the world around her in poetic prose and phrases but appreciates all aspect of life, even pernicious beauty. These unusually dark but moral characters are joined by a slew of similarly arcane, curiously moral, common but unusual people, played by Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Damici, and Sharrieff Pugh. This film quickly captivates the audience with a mysterious brutal murder, an unconventional love story, eerily common characters and a dark mood which alters the viewer's perception of modern day crime and love. It's unlike any other film I've seen: a gem as beautiful, dark, demur, mysterious and captivating as a black opal.

Meg Ryan fan.Meg bares all but I didn't like her roll in the movie. She does better at up beat type movies. Movie was so so, but seemed drawen out. About the only thing, if you like Meg and want to see her nude, this is the movie to see.

Not a usual Meg Ryan movie. Little strange to see her in this kind of sex, violence, drugs movie. I didn't like it even if it wasn't Meg Ryan. All actors were pretty bad. No real story there. Just low life setting and characters. Sorry to see Meg in this type of film. Waste of time.

I was rather disappoined in the filth subject, I don't find that entertainment. I got a third of the way through and threw the movie away!
Just my opinion.
Meg Ryan should be ashamed of her role, Not a wide range, but trashy.
