The Dark Side by Jane Mayer (2008, Hardcover)

Author: Jane Mayer | Publisher: Doubleday | Language: English

Product description

Synopsis
In her investigation into the George W. Bush administration's War on Terror and the War in Iraq, journalist Jane Mayer provides stunning behind-the-scenes accounts of the decision-making process at the White House and the effects on those caught up in the conflicts. Mayer reveals how the White House claimed extraordinary powers, and rationalized them in questionable ways; she reveals exactly what happened to prisoners, and questions the value of torture as a means of gaining intelligence; and she examines just what effects these extra-legal actions had on our Constitution, the balance of power, and our country's standing in the world. Ultimately, Mayer questions whether the Bush administration squandered opportunity, and ultimately failed to honor the president's inaugural oath to defend the people of the United States and its Constitution. THE DARK SIDE was selected as a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award in Nonfiction.

Industry Reviews
"In THE DARK SIDE, Ms. Mayer provides a...the most vivid and comprehensive account we have had so far of how a government founded on checks and balances and respect for individual rights could have been turned against those ideals."
(07/22/2008)

"No other book penetrates further into the black heart of the war on terror than Mayer's masterly examination of the Bush administration's erosion of civil liberties and human rights in the prosecution of that so-called war."

Informative book that will leave you angry

Created: 10/08/09
Jane Mayer has done an incredible job of digging out the truth behind the cabal that took the US from a respected international role model for the rule of law to the brink of an unconstitutional imperial presidency. Among other things, she exposes the Cheney-Rumsfeld henchmen (John Yoo, David Addington, Dough Feith) who used slip-shod "legal" arguments (later tossed out by Bush's last AG, Mike Mukasey) to justify the use of torture on prisoners of war, to re-define "prisoners of war" without legal justification, to violate the Geneva Convention, and perhaps most concerning, to articulate a Nixonian theory of an imperial presidency, where "if the president does it, it isn't illegal." Her book is well-documented, with hundreds of interviews with members of the Bush administration, as well as FBI, CIA, US military personnel and politicians of all ilks.

If the last administration's trampling of the US Constitution and human rightsd didn't trouble you before, it certainly will after you've read this book (unless, of course, you don't believe in the rule of law).

review of the dark side by jane mayer

i bought this for one of my classes and was really amazed that it was really easy to read. its like reading the news paper and after reading the book its easier to understand what they're actually talking about in the news paper when they talk about torture and treatment of detainees, etc. the only thing thats a little hard to keep straight is the names of people in the book. i suggest buying and sharing this book whether you're liberal or conservative you deserve to know what actually happened.

Not credible.

This is nothing more than the disjointed ramblings of a far left wing propagandist. Most of it is pure fiction. Neither readable nor credible.

How did she get access to these amazing details? I'd like to see a movie made of this. The characters are well developed, and you seem to almost get to know them, like you would fellow office workers.
