Movie synopsis

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

Very Long Movie.... But Gripping

Created: 16/06/07
Tina had not seen this one before, and I had not viewed the extended version of the film.

It was very long... but gripping. The action was very realistic, and there were long minutes of no activity, just waiting for the depth charges to go off near the hidden submarine.

We watched part of it in dubbed English, then dubbed English with English subtitles, then German language with English subtitles. Very interesting way to watch a movie!

Recommended viewing for those that have not seen the movie before!

Sometime if you can, you ought to take a tour of a submarine from that era. There is one in San Francisco that I have taken before. It will amaze you on how life was on such a machine!

Desparate fight to achieve their mission and live ...

Created: 21/01/06
I always enjoy seeing the original language film rather than the English version.
Das Boot is one of the best films of its genre and we see from the perspective life in a WWII U-Boat. The acting is superb as is the story, and Jurgen Prochnow at his best. I have seen it more than a few times and every time I see it I notice something new which I had not seen before. I recommend it highly and when you see it you may never look at a U-Boat or its' crew in the same way again. Their desparate fight to achieve their mission and live is memorable.

Das Boot Movie

Created: 09/08/06
This was the original 5 hour version (not the director's cut). Very grity as to what u-boat life was like during WWII. Excellent acting and special effects. Surprise ending.

If you turn on the Closed Caption and well as the English translation, you will notice some differences in what is said and what is shown on the CC. For realistic viewing turn on the German language and read the CC.

Enjoyed the movie. Would rate it 9 out of 10 stars.

Inside the Nazi Submariner's World

Created: 05/04/08
This version of Das Boot rips away the "rah rah" veneer of the average war movie and brings you inside the visceral and violent belly of the U-Boat as British advances in technology begin to trump the Nazi killing machines. I originally saw and loved this movie in the short format in the theater, but I highly recommend this longer version in order to enter inside the submariner's world. Das Boot is presented in the way it was originally conceived as you can touch and taste the characters, and be rocked by the challenges that are suddenly thrust upon them. In a word--SUPERB!

Das Boot movie review

Created: 01/09/10
Originally I decided to get this set because it seemed like you were getting a better deal, when compaired to the single disk version. When compaired to other movies this one is more Historically based, and not full of Hollywood untrue events like similar movies, U-571 for instance. I wish that more movies were cast this way, and produced this way. It just makes more sense and holds more realism in the movie.

I enjoyed watching the movie and later on I may have time to look at the bonus features. I hope they never decide to remake the movie, you can never beat the original.
