Das Boot - The Director's Cut (DVD, 2011, 2-Disc Set, Uncut)

Wolfgang Petersen, Jürgen Prochnow|Theatrical release: 1982 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

Fantastic movie. The sets are incredible. They recreated the interior of a WWII submarine in great detail and filmed most of it within that space. It really conveys the feeling of being inside a submarine (as much as a movie can). The acting was excellent.

It's a story about people assigned to a very dangerous job. A statistic cited in the opening credits states that only 25% of WWII u-boat sailors made it back to shore. They depend on each other and the boat for survival. If you've ever had to fix a flat tire in in the middle of nowhere before freezing to death, you can imagine the high stakes repair work that occurs inside a submarine that's being fired upon.

I bought the uncut version because I'd liked the movie. I wanted to see it in its entirety. If you watch this in the original German, the subtitles in this version are more accurate than the subtitles in the movie length version, IMHO.

I bought this movie because I recently saw previews for it coming out on Blu-Ray. If I hadn't seen those previews, I may never have known about the movie.

I love war movies, so I knew I had to have this one, as well. I was not disappointed. The movie is three hours long, which is not nearly long enough!

Das Boot (The Boat) is about a crew on a WWII German U-Boat. Pretty amazing stuff! All the actors are German speaking, so you can either read the English captions, or change the language to English. Not a problem!

This is a must-have for any war movie junkie!

One of the best if not the best war movie ever made.

One of if not the best war movie ever made. Realistic and sympathetic to both sides. Closest to the real thing, and I've been there. Shows individual heroics, but does not glorify war. Bar scene was a bit overdone and Midshipman's girlfriend was unnecessary to the story. Lost my copy and wanted to see it again.

DAS BOOT is a great world war two epic movie depicting the German navy's effort to dominate the Atlantic with their U-boat’s. The original uncut version of DAS BOOT is a cinematography masterpiece of the life a single submarine toward the end of the fleets “Happy Days”.
