Album Notes
Additional personnel: Dave Chappelle (spoken vocals).Wouldn't it be great to be famous, throw a party, and invite all your favorite musicians to perform for you and your friends? Dave Chapelle thinks so, too, so he threw just such a party in the summer of 2005--in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY--and invited not only his friends but a whole bunch of people he didn't know. A self-professed hip-hop head, Chapelle asked some of the finest and most respected artists in the game--including the Roots, Black Star, Jill Scott, and Common--to provide the music for his little soiree. There's very little thug or hardcore posturing present on any of these tracks (or in the film version of the Party directed by Michel Gondry). Instead, the hip-hop here is socially conscious, groove-oriented, and reflective of the old-school virtues of the hip-hop community. Jill Scott and Erykah Badu bring a taste of sharp-edged R&B to the proceedings, while Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, and Dead Prez keep the raps fluid and consistent throughout this dynamic, good-times throwback of a set.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- [This soundtrack] plays like a greatest-hits of neosoul and mama-friendly hip-hop from the past decade, with open-armed performances from luminaries like Common, Mos Def and Erykah Badu.

One song from perfect.

Created: 08/11/06
This CD is very good. Its eclectic sound is quite profound and lived up to the movie of the same name. With people like Dead Prez, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu Mos Def and The Roots it has something for most Hip-Hop and R&B fans regardless of your sound preference. In fact only one thing kept this CD from being perfect and that was the performance by the Fugees that was on the movie but not in the Soundtrack. I think that was a bad move.

Oh yeah to Sony Music, I think you made a mistake (bad PR) not letting Lauryn Hill and/or the Fugees have a song on this soundtrack. I think this reunion of the group is very important to the "soundography" of their style and will cost you in the long run. Anyway this CD is well worth buying for the music and the statements within the music.

My only wish is that more CD's had the power, track to track as this one.

Re-live the movie....

I had to get this CD after I saw the movie...the soundtrack is great. I got it especially to hear Dead Prez, and the songs with Jill Scott (incl the one with her and Badu). The only thing I don't like about the CD is that there are bits of their phone conference at the beginning of most every song and you can't skip to the song because the talking is part of the song track (you can still fastfoward). Other than that if you loved the movie, you'll love the CD. Dave Chappell is hilarious, but always keepin' it real. I'd probably buy just about any work of his.

I Love this sound track. I love that the soundtrack contain the extended versions of the songs featured in the film and some that was not featured in the film. The only thing that I did not like that the Fugees were not featured on the soundtrack. Despite that, the soundtrack was a must have in my book.
