Movie synopsis
DAVID AND BATHSHEBA brings to life what is possibly the most dramatic story in the Old Testament. Gregory Peck stars as King David, a devout servant of God who is having serious marital difficulties with his wife Michal. Recently returned home from the wars with the Ark of the Covenant in tow, David spies hottie Bathsheba (Susan Hayward) bathing on a nearby rooftop, and in no time at all the two lovebirds are tossing their togas to consume their passion. Of course, there are a couple small hitches--Bathsheba's husband for one, and the wrath of God. With a drought upon the land and King David's flock demanding that Bathsheba be stoned to death for her sins, dashing David must come up with some new psalms on the double to save the kingdom and his love. Special effects work on the Ark was innovative for the period and the costuming is excellent, making DAVID AND BATHSHEBA one of the better biblical films of the 1950s.

This Biblical spectacle was one of the biggest grossing films of the year. It does something many movies of the "Hollywood era" does not....it's focus is on character and not intense action. Led by Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward and a fine supporting cast, the movie is propelled into an interesting vehicle for the lovers of classic movies. The two principal leads standout in their roles as illicit lovers and Peck's redemption after forsaking God, is a memorable flashback. Hayward with her long red tresses is seen to her advantage in glorious Technicolor and she adds depth to a somewhat secondary character over Peck's lead turn. Both roles are understated for this type of movie and should be in every collection. One of the most unusual early 50's religious epics to grace the silver screen. Bravo.

I love the old movies, where you don't have to make the children leave the room because of the filthy language in all the newer movies or the bad scenes.

This is an excellent bibical movie, with a great cast. I purchased this dvd because of price and availablity (very rare and difficult to find).
