Movie synopsis

Set in the near future when the draft has been reinstated, DAY ZERO explores the thought processes of three young New York men as they grudgingly prepare to go off to war. The events of the film, which takes no single political side, happen over the 30 days leading up to the send-off, and follows each friend on a separate path toward making the most important decision of their lives. Elijah Wood plays Feller, a nerdy young writer more accustomed to hunching over an iBook than working out. To Feller, war seems a distant concept, and one he's nowhere near ready for. More than anything, he's scared he'll not physically survive the grueling training that awaits him. Dixon (John Bernthal) comes from a different philosophy. The most working-class of his friends, he sees serving in the military as a duty he is proud to fulfill--an eagerness that comes in part from the fact that he has little else going on in his life. A slacker cab driver not living up to his potential, Dixon only starts to question how he feels about the departure once he starts dating a girl he actually has feelings for. Meanwhile, high-powered attorney Rifkin (Chris Klein) panics over the prospect of being shipped off, calling it "bad timing" and enlisting his politically connected father's help to avoid what, for everyone else, is inevitable.DAY ZERO offers several possible scenarios without ever preaching a message. While some parts of the story are stronger than others, the film does a good job of showing New York from the perspective of three people from drastically different social levels who are forced to face a harsh truth. By making the world of the film so like reality, director Bryan Gunnar Cole suggests that this scenario could happen any day.

Intense film about the draft

Created: 14/06/09
DAY ZERO is not amusing or entertaining. It's a very intense film about what may happen in the not-too-distant future if the war in the Middle East escalates and the draft is reinstated. It follows three men who have gotten their draft notices. They must report in 30 days. How will they react? Elijah Wood delivers a sympathetic performance as a neurotic writer. He is afraid, not so much of being killed, but that he won't measure up...that he will be physically unable to handle the rigors of the military and/or will be disliked by his fellow soldiers. Another character, a lawyer, claims to be a conscientious objector, but the truth is he doesn't want to leave his wife and his high-paying job. He considers various ways to get out of the military, including mutilating himself or having a gay affair, but proves too cowardly to follow through on his plans. The third man is a working-class cab driver who strongly believes it is his obligation to serve --- until he meets the right girl. Who eventually reports for duty --- and who doesn't --- may surprise you, and the film manages to present both sides without actually TAKING sides. This is a great film for a college class; not the right choice for a date night unless you want to spend your time talking about the movie instead of cuddling.

Thought I was back in the 1960s. Brought back many memories how I could get out of being drafted. Vietnam SUCKED that bad. Of course the year I turned 18 tmy draft number was 12. I was going to drafted for sure. All this is in the movie. Never heard of any of the actors but they were all really good. Couple faces I remembered but not names. Very real life . If your a young kid watch this and say a prayer they never bring the draft back. Of course if they did bring it back the world would more than likely be close to being finished. Very real life the more I talk about I like it more and more. Get this movie you will enjoy it.
