Asked by Deram Records to create a rock reworking of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony, the Moodies instead wrote their own symphony, a song cycle that describes the emotions that accompany each part of the day, from dawn ("Dawn Is A Feeling") to night (the classic "Nights In White Satin"). The songs are connected by lush orchestral passages in which the basic musical themes are reworked. Meanwhile, the band had already begun to sound like its own orchestra, using signature Mellotron string sounds, flutes, tympani and multiple vocalists.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars out of 5 -- [T]he Moodies wrote songs about Timothy Leary and the astral plane, recited sixth-form verse over flutes and sitars, and made concept albums without a concept.....Symphonic.

A Classic in Every Sense of the Word

Created: 01/12/06
Days of Future Passed foreshadowed the arrival of symphonic progressive rock groups like Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (and others). The DERAM label wanted an updated rock version of Dvorak's New World Symphony. What they got was an amalgam of rock styles (ballad to driving) fused with classical orchestral elements. If you listen closely, you can tell where the Moodies songs begin and end and where the orchestra takes over. Starting with Tuesday Afternoon, though, the two become increasingly one especially in the case of Nights in White Satin. Once you hear the end of the album with the poem and gong fading out, you'll understand why the CD begins with a reverse sound of a gong: in other words, everything is cyclical. If you've never heard the album in its entirety, it's an eye opening experience in the same way as listening to Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

Days Of Future Passed - Moody Blues (The) (CD 1986)

I remember the Moody Blues from growing up in the 60s & 70s. I really enjoyed some of their albums. This was one of my favorites, and even though somethings don't turn out to be as good as the memory of them, I was not disappointed. The Moody Blues have a great rock orchestra sound, very versatile and enjoyable.

For anyone who enjoys the Moody Blues, this is a must have. There is more enjoyable harmony on this CD than anything recorded in the last 10 years.
