Given Kevin Kline's extensive background in musical theater, Winkler's decision to cast him as Porter proved to be inspired, and Kline is wonderful throughout the soundtrack. Mix in an eclectic array of musicians and what you have is a project that works as an effective bridge between generations. Where else will you find Sheryl Crow luxuriating in a bossa nova-arranged "Begin the Beguine," neo-soul songbird Vivian Green making like Ella Fitzgerald on "Love for Sale," or Porter himself having a grand old time warbling his own "You're the Top?" Other noteworthy performances include Englishmen Robbie Williams taking a slightly foppish romp through "It's De-Lovely," Elvis Costello giving a vaudevillian turn to "Let's Misbehave," and Natalie Cole pouring herself into a lush reading of "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye."

) Lots of definitions of what we call "American Culture" pop up anywhere the discussion turns to the subject, particularly when it come to music. For this reviewer, the first half of the 20th century was the flower of American culture and Cole Porter's lyrics and music absolutely cannot be left out of the discussion. Porter's work epitomized the times in which he lived. Not only is it fun to listen to-it is a sociology lesson as well. This soundtrack is an essential introduction into Porter's work and his life and times.
While many early numbers are basically '30s party music, his attention was turned to the subject of love once he met, and later married, Linda Thomas, a young, beautiful, socially connected divorcee. Then there is the Broadway body of work. This is classic stuff; the stuff of American culture. G.I.'s took it to war with them. People at home whistled Porter's tunes at work out on the streets.
So get yourself a tux, throw a party, mix some cocktails, play the De-Lovely soundtrack, and take a trip back to the zenith of American culture.

) I don't usually buy soundtracks but I liked the stying of Porter's hits in the movie. I had wanted a collection of his music but I wasn't sure what vintage cd to buy and the soundtrack was perfect.
My parrot loves to sing ( off key, but with great enthusiam ) simple tunes usually but when De-Lovely started she paid close attention to every song and sang her little heart out throughout the movie. It's nice to have a CD I know she loves and we have quite a nice time together warbling away with no one to listen.

Completely lovely movie. Cole Porter music all through out. With this CD I can listen to those wonderful songs & float through the day Happy over & over. I just wish I had been born in that era, such elaborate clothing & furnishings. Do buy this CD and see how happy it makes you feel.
