Album Notes
Type O Negative: Pete Steele (bass instrument); Johnny Kelly, Josh Silver, Kenny Hickey.Personnel: Kenny Hickey (vocals, guitar); Paul Bento (vocals, tamboura, box); Josh Silver (vocals, keyboards); Johnny Kelly (vocals, drums); Tambura, Riyaz, Pete Steele (vocals); Bensonhurst Lesbian Choir (background vocals); Tara Vanflower (vocals).Recording information: Paul Bento's Studio; Sty In the Sky, Brooklyn, NY; Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY.A notable underground metal milestone: 26 years after Peter Steele and Josh Silver released their first EP as Fallout, the Brooklynites soldier on still--as half of the self-proclaimed Drab Four. Four years since the group's last output (2003's LIFE IS KILLING ME), Type O Negative present their first set for SPV/Steamhammer with DEAD AGAIN, described by the band as "confused dirge-core." Ever-provocative with his lyrics, Steele tackles the death of a close friend ("Halloween In Heaven"), drug and alcohol abuse ("Dead Again"), and spirituality ("These Three Things"). Guest vocalist Tara VanFlower (of Lycia) lends her own brand of beautiful darkness to the proceedings.

Editorial Reviews
Packed with thick Sabbathy guitars, lush, epic melodies, breakneck stompers, deep romanticism, biting sarcasm and a sprawling sense of morbidity...

I admit it. I have been a fan of this band for the better part of ten years. That being said, this is one of their very best. It is in many ways a return to their Bloody Kisses / Slow, Deep, & Hard beginings. There's a total of 10 tracks that include both their signature speed metal /punk style as well as their deep, melodic hooks.

During my first listen, I would play a few minutes of a song then moved on to the next track. What a mistake. A number of the track are essentially two or more songs spliced together. While one segment may not appeal to you, another part may be a tune that's stuck in your head for the remainder of the day.

One thing that's noticebly absent from this album is, frankly, something that was becoming somewhat tedious in previously releases. Those short. irrelevent sound bites of the band talking or noises of a mechanical nature. I guess this speaks to a band that's maturing -as the return to their core style reflects a band that is content to be what they are - as opposed to what others may want them to be or to realize greater commercial success. Incidentially, Dead Again debuted at number 27 - without any in your face promotion or radio rotation/support. (Man, wouldn't you welcome the day that Goth music overtook the airways and MTV replacing all the thug rap crap that they seem so intent on pusing down our throats?)

Anyway, after four years without a new release, there was speculation a new album may never be forthcoming. With Dead Again, TON not only delivered for their fans, they gave them exactly what they wanted - a return to their tried and true, uncompromising songwriting. I can now look back at World Coming Down and Life is Killing Me as the experiential stage for this band, and I'm glad to have them back to the style that got our attention...oh so many years ago.

Type O Negative - Dead Again

Not much has changed with the Type O Negative formula. They still sound exactly as they did ten years ago. Not that its a bad thing, I like it. Of course there is a song with a Halloween theme called Halloween In Heaven and the usual dark tones they are famous for. My personal favorite is the third track called The Profit Of Doom. During my first listen I replayed that song a few times before moving on. If you have liked their previous releases you should like this one too.

Continued grim greatness from the Brooklyn Four :)

Dead Again is a great, fresh album by Type-O. If you are a longtime or new fan you won't be disappointed. Type-O songs contain, by tradition a lot of variety in style, melody, arrangement, etc. all within a single song, so you HAVE to listen to each song all the way through...like many people often do, don't just listen to the first minute and then skip to another song if you don't like what you hear...Type-O songs build...they ebb and flow like the tide, like sex even,in Type-O's music there's always some musical/lyrical foreplay at the beginning, rising to a climax and then a cool down...no joke. A couple of my favorite standout songs are: September Sun and These Three Things. Enjoy!
