Deadwood - The Complete Second Season (DVD, 2006, 6-Disc Set)

Ian McShane, Molly Parker|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

HBO delivers another stunning, evocative drama in DEADWOOD. The channel has an impressive reputation when it comes to producing edge-of-your-seat television (THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER), and DEADWOOD follows neatly in that tradition. Set in 1876, the story unfolds just two weeks after the defeat of Custer at Little Big Horn. The grim and unsentimental series revolves around the outlaws, miscreants, and murderers in the frontier gold-rush town of Deadwood in the Dakota Territory. Seth Bullock, a former Montana sheriff, and his buddy Sol Star arrive in town to set up a hardware store; soon, they're crossing paths with such legendary Western figures as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Reaping the benefits of the lawless, merciless world is Al Swearengen, the saloon and brothel owner. Season Two kicks off with Bullock beginning his job as sheriff; it seems that civilization, in the form of a telegraph line and local commissioners, is coming to Deadwood after all, and Swearengen is none too pleased with the situation. Meanwhile, Bullock's estranged wife and son arrive in town, even as Bullock consummates his affections for Alma Garret in her hotel room. The brutal world of Deadwood continues in a second finely crafted season, and the plots and bodies keep piling up.

Don't Miss This!

Created: 04/09/08
I was hesitant to watch this series because I thought 'Eh, a western.' Don't let that stop you! It's a story that just happens to be set in the old west. The way the characters evolve is truly wonderful; I care about what happens to them and can't wait to see what happens in the next episode (we ration ourselves to 1 episode at a time). There are no pat endings EVER.

My only quibble with Deadwood is that there's an enormous amount of profanity. I know there was probably a lot in that time period, but at times it seems like a gratuitous amount, and it's distracting. Still, a great, great series, and I very much recommend it.

The Old West

The second season continues but picks up the tempo. The first season lagged at the end, the second raised the interest level. The content of these shows is very graphic, but the story is good enough to ignore that. If you were a fan of NYPD Blue or the old West I would recommend these. One of the orginal writers of Blue is involved in the making of Deadwood, one can see a common style in the two.

Deadwood - The Complete Second Season on DVD

Created: 04/08/06
Even though I’ve already seen Season 2 of Deadwood, I had to buy this set of DVDs. Some new arrivals in camp, and if you can believe it, somewhat more brutal. There’s so much information and entertainment in this series, every time I watch an episode, I become aware of something I didn’t catch the previous time around. If you’re a Deadwood fan, I highly recommend the Season 2 DVD set of this popular HBO series.

Fabulous - Loved Season 1 - Season Two Is Just As Good!

Simply my kind of Western! Gritty and provocative. Great characters and super story line. Well acted, actors you know and others that are new. Great sets, that look like they came right out of the era. The language is a little intense, but is probably what was used back then. Thank you HBO!

Deadwood Rules

Created: 15/08/09
I have already seen this show several times. By far the best drama on TV EVER! If you love great characters, story lines, acting, directing and/or historical pieces, this show will leave you wanting more! I was never a fan of westerns until this show. Any western you watch after this series will seem very "Hollywood" by comparison. Though not historically accurate in every detail, you still get the feeling you are watching a rugged slice of life from the time era. The historical aspects are perfect in the details, though not so much in the real life people they portray. The series is so good, it is easy to forget any discrepancies and get sucked into this television masterpiece.
