Movie synopsis

Dogme '95 cofounders Thomas Vinterberg (CELEBRATION) and Lars Von Trier (DANCER IN THE DARK, DOGVILLE) team up in DEAR WENDY, an unusual but entertaining drama set in an unnamed American small town. Jamie Bell, the award-winning actor who played the title role in BILLY ELLIOT, stars as Dick, a teenager loner whose father (Trevor Cooper) is disappointed that the boy has chosen not to work with him in the mines. Shortly following his father's death, Dick develops a fetish for a gun he bought in a toystore, and he soon forms a special club with fellow outcasts Freddie (Michael Angarano), Huey (Chris Owen), Susan (Alison Pill), and Stevie (Mark Webber). The teens meet regularly in an abandoned section of the mine, where they refer to their guns as their "partners," experiment with unique shooting styles, and live by their own code of bizarre rules--which include never firing aboveground at people. But when Sheriff Krugsby (Bill Pullman) asks Dick to help take care of troubled teen Sebastian (Danso Gordon), things don't go quite as planned, leading to an unforgettable ending. The quirky, compelling film, written by Von Trier and directed by Vinterberg, features cool costumes, expert pacing, and familiar songs by the 1960s group the Zombies.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[T]his Lars von Trier-scripted guns-do-so-kill-people parable, directed by his Dogma coconspirator Thomas Vinterberg, has cheek to spare."
Premiere - Glenn Kenny (10/01/2005)

"Jamie Bell shows gravitas as the narrator hero....This is very much a European vision of the US, and the film's re-creation of small-town America is deliberately idiosyncratic and alienating..."
Sight and Sound - Geoffrey Macnab (03/01/2006)

Really Enjoyable

Created: 28/02/06
As an avid Jamie Bell fan, I went into the theater to see Dear Wendy expected nothing more than a subpar film with an excellent performance by Jamie. All the film synopsis that I'd read made the film sound...well...rather awful. Honestly, the publicists for this film did a terrible job because the movie is nothing like the synopsis. There is a unique idea combined with a unique style of filmmaking, combined with wonderful performances from a talented group of young actresses and actors. The story is of Dick (Bell)who spends his short life being a meek and rather unproductive character. His father wants him to work in the mines, but he hasn't the disposition. Only his nanny/maid/mother figure believes that he will be able to achieve anything in life. However, the father dies and the nanny leaves and Dick is on his own in the world. It is only when carry Wendy, a small gun that he thought was a toy, does he feel self-assured and, for lack of a better word, manly. So, he wants his newfound confidence to rub off on the other outcasts in his neighborhood, so he forms a club called the Dandies-- a group of pacifists dedicated to knowing everything they possibly can about guns.
Well... I think we all know where this is headed when a young man just out of jail on parole comes into the picture after killing a man. The Dandies will finally learn the true power of guns. I don't think that everyone will like this movie, however. So, I suggest trying to rent it before buying it.
