A Death in Belmont by Sebastian Junger (2006, Unabridged, Compact Disc)

Product description

Synopsis
The author of THE PERFECT STORM revisits a decades-old murder in this riveting work of true crime. In 1963, the Boston Strangler terrified the city and the surrounding suburbs with his rape/murder spree. The killing of Bessie Goldberg fit the Strangler's MO, and when police arrested African-American handyman and house cleaner Roy Smith for the crime, they assumed Smith was the Strangler. Years later, when white painter/carpenter Albert DeSalvo confessed to being the Strangler, Smith was already serving life in prison for the Goldberg murder. Junger evaluates the possibility that DeSalvo (who refused to number Goldberg among his admitted string of murders), not Smith (who also refused to admit guilt) killed Bessie Goldberg. What lends this book an added frisson is that during the period surrounding the murder (including the day in question), DeSalvo was working as a carpenter for Junger's mother.

Publisher's Note

In 1963, with the city of Boston already terrified by a series of savage crimes known as the Boston Stranglings, a murder occurred in the quiet suburb of Belmont, just a few blocks from the house of Sebastian Junger's family -- a murder that seemed to fit exactly the pattern of the Strangler. Roy Smith, a black man who had cleaned the victim's house that day, was arrested, tried, and convicted, but the terror of the Strangler continued.

Two years later, Albert DeSalvo, a handyman who had been working at the Jungers' home on the day of the Belmont murder, and had often spent time there alone with Sebastian and his mother, confessed in lurid detail to being the Boston Strangler.

This is the point of entry to Junger's first book-length project since The Perfect Storm: a narrowly averted tragedy for Junger's family opens out into an electrifying exploration of race and justice in America. By turns exciting and subtle, the narrative chronicles three lives that collide -- and are ultimately destroyed -- in the vortex of one of the first and most controversial serial murder cases in America. The power of the story and the brilliance of Junger's reporting place this book on the short shelf of classics beside In Cold Blood and Helter Skelter.

Read by Kevin Conway

Documents the events surrounding the early 1960s serial murder case of the Boston Strangler, recounting how an innocent African-American housekeeper was hastily convicted and how the actual killer, carpenter Albert DeSalvo, eventually confessed. First serial, Vanity Fair. Simultaneous.

Sebastian Junger turns away from the destructive effects of the elements (Fire and A Perfect Storm) to write about deadly force of a very different kind: the Boston Strangler murders of the 1960’s. Roy Smith, a Black employee for a local housecleaning service, was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison for killing Bessie Goldberg, who may or may not have been the Strangler’s ninth victim. He consistently maintained his innocence. On the day of the crime, Albert DeSalvo, an Italian-American carpenter, was part of a crew that was working on the nearby Junger home. Two years later, convicted and jailed for a series of area rapes, DeSalvo confessed to the Strangler murders. He was never charged with those crimes.

Junger examines the histories of both men, the psychology of serial murderers, the limitations of the criminal justice system and forensic evidence, and the insidiousness of racism, presenting a thorough, lucid and sobering reckoning of precisely how justice could sometimes go awry. Kevin Conway delivers a strong, partially differentiated reading that maintains its objectivity, letting the readers decide for themselves which of these men, if either, was indeed the Strangler.

I found this book very informative about a period of time, the 60's. The author had a front row seat to alot of the events that were happening to the
world at that time. Being a fan of Junger's A Perfect Storm I purchased this
book by his name and the fact that I enjoy history of the 60's because of its
turbulence and nation-shaping events. I would recommend this book to anyone
who enjoys reading about the trials and tribulations of that era of unjustice
and confusion. It has everything! Junger is an excellent storyteller and this
particular event being so close to his homelife makes it that much more chill-
ing.

great story to listen to; kept me interested through the whole audio. If you like murder type stories, this one will keep you listening. This story takes you back in history to other mass murders, rapists and such. Done in a tasteful manner while also keeping you on present time with great detail you can almost picture the situation.
