Death at a Funeral (DVD, 2009, Dual Side)

Frank Oz, Matthew MacFadyen, Rupert Graves|Theatrical release: 2007 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Written by Dean Craig and directed by comedic veteran Frank Oz, DEATH AT A FUNERAL finds a well-to-do British family attempting to bury their patriarch amidst a backdrop of secrets, revelations, rivalries, and illicit pharmaceuticals. While the dutiful Daniel (Matthew MacFadyen) stoically contends with major roadblocks in planning his father's funeral, including being presented with the wrong body, others connected with the family have catastrophes of their own, including the anxious Simon (Alan Tudyk), who is engaged to Martha (Daisy Donovan), and mistakenly takes a hallucinogen to calm his nerves. Lurking in the background is a mysterious stranger (Peter Dinklage) who threatens to send the chaotic proceedings over the brink.A charming mix of high- and lowbrow humor, DEATH AT A FUNERAL is a lively farce that makes the most of its hijinks-filled script and topnotch cast. In addition to excellent performances by MacFadyen (PRIDE & PREJUDICE) and Tudyk (SERENITY), the film features fine turns by Donovan, Andy Nyman, and former Swinging London sweetheart Jane Asher. Easily Oz's best movie since the giddily silly BOWFINGER, DEATH showcases the director's knack for working with large ensembles, and will appeal to fans of his earlier romp IN & OUT, as well as to aficionados of biting British comedy.

"[D]irector Frank Oz comes back strong with this absolutely uproarious British comedy of no manners."
Box Office - Tim Cogshell (06/22/2007)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The lack of propriety and solemnity is precisely what makes this comic farce so uproariously funny."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (08/17/2007)

"Macfadyen crumples very endearingly as his character succumbs to the tide of mishaps, and there are showreel moments too for Kris Marshall..."
Sight and Sound - Lisa Mullen (11/01/2007)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Frank Oz's frantic farce tickles thanks to a rapid-fire stream of slapstick gags and gallows humour."
Total Film - Jane Crowther (11/01/2007)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Impeccable comic timing ensures the gags flow fast, while some delightfully ludicrous predicaments keep things fresh."
Empire - James Dyer (10/19/2007)

"DEATH AT A FUNERAL is a lethal farce, combining hints of THE LAVENDER HILL MOB, doses of Joe Orton and a smidgen of the Farrelly brothers' scatology in its mix."

Classic British comedy at it's best...

Created: 11/05/08
This film represents classic British comedy at it's best... one part serious mixed with 2 parts dry humor and shaken with a bit of an accent! The only thing I didn't like was the fast(& sometimes manic) pace of the storyline, which I found to be a bit nerve-wracking at times... the main characters were on edge... and so was I.

It is the day of Daniel's (Matthew MacFadyen) father's funeral and everything that can go wrong does go wrong... and I DO mean EVERYTHING... From the funeral parlor delivering the wrong body, to the mistaken use of hallucinogen drugs to calm the guests' nerves, to the blackmailer threatening to reveal unsavory secrets about the deceased's love-life it is all that the stoic and incredibly serious Daniel can do to keep things together for his family and give his father a dignified send off.

I found this movie to be a little different from the norm and again, definitely along the lines of a classic British comedy (think Funny Money, the Monty Python films, or the hit series Absolutely Fabulous). If you are a fan of these types of shows- you will probably LOVE this movie.

Wonderfully Entertaining Farce

Created: 13/07/08
Death at a Funeral is a classic farce delivered with style and wit in the unlikliest of settings. The film sports a terrific cast full of actors whose faces you recognize, even if you don't know their names. It's deftly directed by Frank Oz of Muppets fame.

Matthew Macfadyen (Spooks/MI-5, Pride & Prejudice) leads this wonderful cast through a series of the most unlikely and yet, laugh out loud funny escapades at his father's funeral. He's joined by Alan Tudyk (Dodgeball, Firefly), Peter Dinklage (Station Agent, Prince Caspian)and a host of other very funny people in a a funeral that goes from bad to worse.

It's fun all the way the through and highly commended for anyone who loves a good misadventure. There is drug-use (sort of) and nudity (kinda) and strong language.

Buy this sleeper today. You won't be sorry.

No I Didn't

Did I laugh like an idiot through out this film, no did I laugh period yes! I agree this is a funny movie, but far from the huge belly laughs described by my fellow reviewers..film starts out with the traditional funeral joke ie: the wrong corpse, off goes the funeral home director and his crew to retrieve the proper coffin/dead guy...in this case a well loved and respected father/man..from there the scenes only get funnier...especially if you throw in a stoned nervous trying to get along with daddy sort, a strange blackmailing dwarf, a well respected, but lazy and cheap best selling author and a nervous goody goody would be writer who lives in his famous brothers shadow..also add in some black sheep mourners and you have a recipe for hilarity..Not for children, but anyone over the age of 17 will love this funny film!

"Killer" comedy

Created: 09/02/10
I watched this at a friends' house, and despite us all having had the funeral experience we all laughed ourselves silly! Through a series of minor clashes, misunderstandings, a drug "spike", and a truly bizarre relationship entered into by the deceased, this rapidly devolves in side-splitting chaos that bears little resemblance to intentions and expectations; nobody was bored! Everybody plays it to the hilt, including Jane Asher who performances of late have brought new meaning to the term "wooden"! Here she excels herself. The rest of the cast put in crackerjack performances also. Now to track down the rib strapping tape!

Death a a Funeral

This is a hilarious movie. If you like british humor, you will love it. There were times when we were laughing so hard at one joke, we missed the punchline for the next. You will be drawn in from the first scene when they bring the wrong body. Never have I seen a movie that takes place only during a funeral and never has a movie made me laugh so hard.
