This is Ms. Levine's latest book...#6, in the Jaine Austen mysteries. Ms. Levine use to write for the Bob Newhart Show, Lavern & Shirley, Love Boat, Jefferson's and others and her writing style makes this series tops on my list!
Jaine is a freelance writer who works from her home, mostly,trying to make a living by writing some catchy ads or even resumes, but lately with her bank account hitting zero she is forced to accept an assignment from Dorcus MacKenzie, a really bad comic who uses pantyhose in her feminist act. Down at the Laff Palace, Dorcus is constantly heckled by another comedian, Vic Cleveland, on and off stage. Vic is not that popular with anyone because he is so obnoxious and has been known to steal jokes if given half the chance. Once his act is s finished, he comes back to the bar and makes an announcement that he is has been offered a TV pilot by his new agent,Reagan Dixon, who he also says he is planning on marrying. What a shock for his present agent sitting at the bar and his current fiancee, Allison, not to mention one of his on-the-side girlfriends,Molly.....all who are shooting daggers at him. Vic is quite the jerk who has an enemy list a mile long! Dorcus, being drunk at the time of the announcement from Vic, jumps off her stool and throws herself on him and begins to strangle him in front of everyone. She is pulled off, but most wish she had finished the deed. Naturally, later that night when Vic is found strangled with one of Dorcus' pantyhose wrapped around his neck she is arrested for his murder. The police think it is an open and shut case but Jaine knows Dorcus didn't do it and sets out to find the real culprit, which could be any of the comics in the L.A. area!
I highly recommend this series. Best read from the first book, but never disappoints!
