Deck the Halls (DVD, 2007, Dual Side)

John Whitesell, Matthew Broderick, Danny DeVito|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A slapstick holiday heart-warmer in the tradition of HOME ALONE, DECK THE HALLS boasts an excellent cast that includes both seasoned actors and promising stars. Matthew Broderick (FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF) stars as Steve Finch, an optometrist in the postcard town of Cloverdale, Massachusetts, who does double duty as the town's "Christmas Guy." Steve was raised as an army brat, and as an adult looks to make up for his childhood's lack of Yuletide cheer, organizing Christmas around a strict regimen of maximum celebration efficiency. Because Steve finds his kids turning out a little weirder than he would like--10-year-old Carter (Dylan Blue) is suffering a midlife crisis and teenage Madison (Aliyah Shawkat, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) is a loner with a bad attitude--he deems them in need of heightened holiday cheer. Steve's hopes for the perfect Christmas are disturbed, however, when new neighbors move in across the street. Car salesman Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito, BE COOL), his wife Tia (Kristen Chenoweth, RUNNING WITH SCISSORS), and their blonde-bombshell twin daughters (Sabrina and Kelly Aldridge) are a bit rowdier than most of the folks in the Finches' quiet neighborhood, to say the least. When Buddy takes it upon himself to create an extravagant Christmas spectacle so that his house can be seen from space, the rivalry between Steve and Buddy reaches drastic heights of ridiculousness, until both men learn a little something about the meaning of Christmas.Although Cloverdale resembles few contemporary American towns in its community made up exclusively of well-to-do Christians, DECK THE HALLS offers much for families to enjoy, with a warm message about the importance of family and the value of spontaneity in a culture of efficiency. Kristen Davis of SEX AND THE CITY charms as Steve's wife Kelly, while Broderick and DeVito are always fun to watch.

Good Christmas Film~Lots of Laughs in this one.........

Created: 10/03/08
While not quite as good as Christmas Vacation, or Home Alone, this is still a good Christmas film, and I was pleasantly surprised. This ones about a neighbor gone bad (Buddy Hall) who can't seem to succeed at anything in life. He steals electricity from his neighbor across the street with a well-placed power cord, and literally makes a Christmas lighting display that can be seen from space. Danny DeVito (Buddy Hall)plays the new neighbor across the street from Matthew Broderick (Steve Finch). Steve Finch's wife Kelly is played by Sex in the City's Kristin Davis. And to round things out, Buddy has two beautiful girls as well as a bubbly wife played by Kristin Chenoweth. This one reminds me of the film What About Bob with Devito playing Bob. Give this one 4 stars for some great laughs.

What Fun It Is

Danny Devito and Matthew Broderick are definitely in their element in this fun Christmas adventure..Matthew Broderick plays a Optomatrist who takes Christmas very seriously..then in moves new Neighbor Hall played by Danny Devito, Hall (his last name) wants more then anything to fit in that is his goal until his gorgeous twin Daughters find a website that allows people to view their homes from space..when theirs is not visible..Hall sets out to make it visible..all he wants is to be seen all his neighbor wants is to have his glory of being known as "The Christmas Guy" back! As the competition gets out of hand the laughs get louder and louder..a great film for the entire family..be warned some light adult situations Parents may want to monitor their kids during this one..rent or buy this film it's worth the money!

Not for kids and not for adults

Created: 14/12/07
This is one of those movies that if you are a pretty uptight parent (in a good way, of course) then this movie may not be for you. If you are just a grown up, this may not be for you.

Big names, stupid jokes, unclear storyline in some parts, good lighting (lol) and skimpily dressed twins. What's not to like?

In short, the thing to know before watching that they don't really make clear in the beginning is that Matthew B's character is known in town as THE Christmas guy...apparently with THE Christmas house and THE Christmas traditions. He's known for it, and while that is barely mentioned in the beginning, if it had been more clear the movie would have been a tad better.

The kids will LOVE the slapstick humor, the amazing lights and the fighting humor. SOME parents will wonder why the sexual humor, some won't even notice it much. But for a true kids' movie I could have left out the near upskirt shots of the buxom ding-dong twin girls and such.

It really, when you get down to it, wasn't that funny. I didn't laugh once and I'm a pretty easy laugher! My kids review it as just okay.

One of the best recent Christmas movies. Danny Devito is great!! The movie is very funny and heartwarming. It has a few questionable scenes and is probably not very appropriate for children under 12. There is a part when the fathers are drooling over a provocative Christmas dance and the dancers end up being their own daughters. Overall, the lessons learned make this a great family film as long as your child is old enough to understand the humor.
