Movie synopsis

Ryan Reynolds and a bevy of excellent actresses star in this smart and touching romantic comedy about a little girl trying to understand her father's complicated history with women. Will Hayes (Reynolds) is in the midst of a divorce, and his 11-year-old daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) wants to understand what went wrong with her parents' relationship. She begs her father to tell her the entire story of how he met her mother. Will begrudgingly agrees, but changes the names of everyone involved, leaving it up to Maya to decipher who in the story is her mother. Thus Will begins his tale, weaving a romantic and amusing maze of missed connections and bad timing with the likes of three beautiful women: Summer (Rachel Weisz), April (Isla Fisher), and Emily (Elizabeth Banks). Will bounces from relationship to relationship, misunderstandings and confusion thwarting him every step of the way. Who will he end up with? Which woman is ultimately right for him? The film keeps Maya and the viewer guessing right until the very end, with a bittersweet but ultimately triumphant surprise twist tying it all together. Reynolds has long outgrown his VAN WILDER days, and does an excellent job of holding his own with the talented Fisher, Weisz, and Banks. The film is certainly a stand-out from the current crop of romantic comedies, in that the women are intelligent, well-drawn characters, and the relationships are painted with a funny, but realistic eye. And blessedly, it doesn't end with the standard blowout wedding that has become the hallmark of such films. DEFINITELY, MAYBE is a smart and sexy take on the complexities of love, and still manages to be kid friendly, while sending a very positive, honest message to children of divorce.

Very Nice, Romantic Family Movie

Created: 30/06/08
William Hayes (charmingly played by Ryan Reynolds) is a political consultant turned ad exec trying to explain his impending divorce to his 11-year old daughter, Maya (played by Kit Kittredge's, Abigail Breslin). Will does so by relating a story, presumably changing the names of the main characters, telling of his 3 serious romances, one of whom will turn out to be his wife and Maya's mother. The story intermittently returns to Will and his daughter, but generally follows a straight line from Will's college days with true love, Emily, through the more sophisticated romance with Summer, and then to his off-again/on-again friendship with April. The movie is almost entirely clean (there are some body part references in the context of a sex education class at Maya's school), very romantic and not without sophistication. My 11 and 10-year old daughters LOVED it!

Wonderful Story Line

Created: 14/08/08
Ryan Reynolds (National Lampoon's Van Wilder & more recently Just Friends) Stars in this comic look at the love live of a father as he tells the story to his daughter (Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine and the recently released Nim's Island) of how she came to be.

The story begins with Breslin hounding her father to tell her the story of how she was born, Reynolds then tells her the story, which is the rest of the movie.

There some good humor and the movie has a wonderful story line and in the end everyone ends up happy.

If you like Romantic Comedy's this would be a good addition to your collection.

Rated 4 of 5 for a good performance by Reynolds and Breslin.

Definitely one to see...

Great movie!

This has become one of my favorite movies--a great romantic comedy! Ryan Reynolds has come a long way as an actor, and he is great in this movie. Isla Fisher is also good, and gets the benefit of delivering some great and memorable movie lines. Abigail Breslin is cute as Ryan's daughter, who wants to find out how he came to marry her Mom, and seeks to understand why they are now getting divorced. (I can't tell you who the Mom is played by...you'll have to watch to find out.) For anyone that lived through Clinton-Gate, this will bring back some memories, as it takes us from the 90's through today. Anyone who has had ups and downs in there job careers will be able to identify with Ryan's character. An then of course, anyone who has gone through the ups and downs of relationships will relate. Watch it now!

What a wonderful movie this was. It is a family type movie that tugs at your heart. The story line was great and the acting was over the top. I thought that it would be a corny type of movie but it was a surprisingly great movie. To be able to watch an endearing movie like this gives a feeling of warmth and hope. I like to watch a movie that isn't full of blood and guts, or that scares you out of your wits. This movie is a keeper and will not disappoint you and the bonus is you can watch this one with your kids!! I recommend it to all and you, like I was, will be glad to have taken the time to watch it. It is a movie that you like to watch over and over and still get a good feeling from. Isn't that what watching a movie is all about? It leaves you entertained and leaves you feeling good. The movie shows how a child can be interested in the reasons for their parents getting a divorce and a parents quest to help their children understand that parents sometimes don't make it. I really liked the way the plot made it a story in order to help his daughter understand why her parents went together anymore but the movie takes it one step further to attempt to show how a new possibility of a "step" parent doesn't take the place of a parent, but adds someone else to love instead. Great movie!!!!
