The Descent (DVD, 2006, R-Rated, Full Frame)

Neil Marshall, Shauna MacDonald, Natalie Mendoza|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

THE DESCENT, a claustrophobic and intense British horror film from Neil Marshall (DOG SOLDIERS), follows six courageous young women who venture down a deep, deep cavern in the Appalachian Mountain range. They are expert rafters and rock climbers--particularly the leader, Juno (Natalie Mendoza), and Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), who is still getting over the death of her husband and daughter the year before. Any healing and bonding is scuttled fast, however, once a cave-in cuts off their return route, forcing them deeper down into the darkness, their flashlight batteries dwindling with every wasted minute. The horror builds, the passageways get tighter and tighter, and then Sarah thinks she have seen something moving in the distance, something that looks almost human....To give away any more would be a crime, but let's just say horror film lovers should find plenty to love here: there's gallons of gore, jump-in-your-seat shocks, and sly references to other films. The women characters are strongly etched, and excellent editing makes it possible to always know what's happening to whom, even as the flashlights are going out, the darkness is moving in, and the unholy screams are echoing off the cavern walls.

One of my favorite Horror films of 2006

Created: 12/12/06
The Descent is One of my favorite Horror films of 2006 and beyond. It's original and inventive and scary as heck!!!

I'll start by saying that I love most films by Maple, and I expected big things from The Descent. It didn't dissapoint.

This movie is freaky, bloody, gory, and horrific. It has a great story, a great cast, and an ending to die for. It's original and imaginative, and it maintains a creepy atmosphere from beginning to end.

The Descent has a very claustrophobic feel to it. It's filmed so well that during some of the sequences you actually feel like you're in the caves with them, and that's not too pleasant.

The creatures in this film are absolutely terrifying, they're sick, disgusting, and quite disturbing. If you've seen the Maple film Creep you know what to expect.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Rent or Buy?: I'd definitely buy this if you're a fan of horror films.

Good psychological horror, better than I expected

Created: 31/03/07
As far as the scare factor goes, this movie is more psychological than anything. If being alone in pitch black dark darkness miles below the surface with no idea of the way out is creepy then I think you would like this movie. If that's not enough, throw in the thought that you aren't the only "thing" down there and hearing your friends screaming bloody murder.

This isn't your cut and dry horror flick with the infamous killer chasing the innocent victim with weapon in hand. So, if you're looking for something easy to watch, this isn't the movie for you. To really enjoy it you have to get in the mindset, imagining how you would feel, what you would do, etc.

I originally saw the Descent in theatres. It is an excellently filmed, gory masterpiece that I just had to own myself. Its clever screen shots make for a griping, nail biting, non stop ride from start to finish. If you love horror films, you will love the Descent.
