Diary of a Mad Black Woman (DVD, 2005)

Darren Grant, Kimberly Elise, Tyler Perry|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Genres and genders collide in this unusual mix of Christian soap opera and raunchy cross-dressing comedy. Tyler Perry adapts his own play--one of a series wherein he personally portrays Grandma Madea, an overweight, no-nonsense, old, Christian, African-American woman. In DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, the main character is Helen (Kimberly Elise), whose wealthy, abusive husband Charles (Steve Harris) kicks her out of their mansion after 18 years of marriage. Luckily Grandma Madea is there to offer some tough love. When a gangster's bullet later makes Charles a cripple, Helen has to decide between love (i.e. wreaking Madea-sanctioned old testament vengeance) and Christian duty. The movie then progresses in two directions: the well-acted dramatic side, with Helen getting her life together thanks to the love of the dreamy Orlando (YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS star Shemar Moore) and her hospitalized momma (Cecily Tyson); and the go-for-broke humor side, with Harris whooping it up in unfettered glee as the chainsaw-wielding, pistol-packing Madea (he also plays several other roles). Whatever one's take on the oddness of the combination, there is no denying the power of Perry's unique mixture of cross-dressing outrageousness and Christian good intent, or the fine acting talent of the entire cast.

Editorial reviews

"Distinguishing it from mainstream Hollywood fare is its unusual blend of melodrama, comedy, revenge fantasy and a morality play, with an uplifting spiritual underpinning throughout."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (02/25/2005)

"[Perry] pumps his cliches so full of hot air that they stay aloft even as you're laughing at their brazenness."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (03/04/2005)

Perfect & Accurate Title

The movie is a diary of one black woman's life - and you see her recording her diary throughout the movie. She supported and loved her husband with all her might for nearly 20 years, even tried having kids by him, but could not have any due to being stressed and suffering violent and shameful mental and physical abuse and humiliation by him. Early on (beginning of movie) her husband's betrayal and violent abuse is shown when he pretended to love her before others when receiving a reward at a function, only to be quite the opposite in private with her when going home - he gives her verbal cruelty, physical cruelty - dragging and casting her out of her own home before a woman whom he brings home to replace her (he secretly had children by this woman over the years). That is where the movie began, to let you know why she was so angry and to lead way to the remainder of the story, where she learned the meaning of true forgiveness. She later in the movie found herself, became victorious and met another of which she gained true love.
Even though she suffered throughout the movie by her husband, she managed to keep her wonderful heart and never lost the love inside herself down to the end.
Despite the seriousness of what was to be learned, the movie had many funny moments and laughter as well as pain.
I love this movie for its excellent script, down-to-earth fun, sensitivity, humor, spirituality, music, and superb acting by all, including Tyler Perry's many roles. Tyler Perry manages to teach good morals/spiritual messages in all of his plays and movies, and in this one he taught the importance of forgiveness. It is only through true forgiveness that one can be victorious and free - to move on to a more happy and fulfilling life.

This is an incredible movie. Author, director, and actor Tyler Perry has such a unique talent, in that he is able to make us laugh, cry, and see ourselves like never before. For every woman who has been down-trodden, for every individual who thinks there's no way to win, this movie is for you.
Diary of a Mad Black Woman deals with the issues of spousal abuse, infidelity, and a woman's need to be free; the importance of family and the overwhelming power of love.
Tyler Perry's testimony about where he came from and where he is now is an inspiration. His character, Madea, (and I DO mean Character) is hilariously funny! I have viewed all his plays except the newest, and they are, without exception, absolutely wonderful.
This was a must have addition to my movie collection, I have viewed it more than once, and will do so again. Diary of a Mad Black Woman is a must see!

Helen is completely satisfied with her life. But the night before her 18th anniversary, her husband kicks her out of their home and replaces her with his mistress, calling Helen's marriage -- and her whole life -- into question. Seeking shelter with her grandmother Madea, Helen tries to put the pieces back together.

Tyler Perry will go far!!!! This was a heart warming and funny movie. Grandpa Joe and Madea made laugh so hard. This movie has a great cast, great acting, and will bring a tear to your eye. This movie has the best of all the old fashion values. Well worth buying, and you will not be sorry. P.S. Shemar Moore is this prettist man I have ever seen, LOL... and I am straight.
