Movie synopsis

Genres and genders collide in this unusual mix of Christian soap opera and raunchy cross-dressing comedy. Tyler Perry adapts his own play--one of a series wherein he personally portrays Grandma Madea, an overweight, no-nonsense, old, Christian, African-American woman. In DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, the main character is Helen (Kimberly Elise), whose wealthy, abusive husband Charles (Steve Harris) kicks her out of their mansion after 18 years of marriage. Luckily Grandma Madea is there to offer some tough love. When a gangster's bullet later makes Charles a cripple, Helen has to decide between love (i.e. wreaking Madea-sanctioned old testament vengeance) and Christian duty. The movie then progresses in two directions: the well-acted dramatic side, with Helen getting her life together thanks to the love of the dreamy Orlando (YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS star Shemar Moore) and her hospitalized momma (Cecily Tyson); and the go-for-broke humor side, with Harris whooping it up in unfettered glee as the chainsaw-wielding, pistol-packing Madea (he also plays several other roles). Whatever one's take on the oddness of the combination, there is no denying the power of Perry's unique mixture of cross-dressing outrageousness and Christian good intent, or the fine acting talent of the entire cast.

Editorial reviews

"Distinguishing it from mainstream Hollywood fare is its unusual blend of melodrama, comedy, revenge fantasy and a morality play, with an uplifting spiritual underpinning throughout."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (02/25/2005)

"[Perry] pumps his cliches so full of hot air that they stay aloft even as you're laughing at their brazenness."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (03/04/2005)

DVD: Diary of a Mad Black Woman

I love this movie. I am a new Tyler Perry fan. My husband brought home two borrowed DVD's with Madea's live shows. I never got to watch them but I heard my family laughing and they kept telling me to watch. I did and I like it. So then I saw Diary of a Mad Black Woman on eBay and I bought it. This is done in a movie, not a play (I hear there is a play to this also). I LOVED it! Not only is Tyler Perry's work funny, but thought provoking, and there is an underlying message of forgiveness, prayer, goodness and reality too! There are some things "Madea" says that got me thinking. Especially the part about forgiveness. Subtle church messages aside, I love Madea, I wish she was my Grandmother and I will continue to buy and watch Tyler Perry movies.

One of the best movies I've ever seen. This one shows how one woman(and Madea) choose to get even with her unfaithful & abusive hot shot lawyer husband. She soon understands what her Christian mother instilled in her... that no matter how someone has hurt you it does not give you the right to return the favor and that to truly heal she must learn to forgive. In between all of the hurt, anger, and process of divorce she finds herself in love with a man who wants nothing more than to be her knight in shining armor. Tyler Perry's Plays & movies are very funny, but always have a moral lesson to learn in the end. Sure to bring a tear to your eye & a smile to your heart and tons of laughs.

At first I thought I would be rolling on the floor laughing, which at times I did laugh at some of Tyler Perry's hilarious dialogue. As the movie progressed though, I realized the deeper storyline. A woman, silver spoon fed for her entire life by her high profile attorney husband, finds herself scorned for his mistress. After making her own way, and meeting the man of her dreams who is far from wealthy himself, she is torn between her husband's near death experience and the man she has fallen in love with. A hilarious, tear-jerking movie about the strength of faith, and a Mad Black Woman.

DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN

TYLER PERRY'S HUNOR KNOWS NO BOUNDS, BUT AS IN ALL HIS SCRIPTS - THERE IS TRUTH AT THE HEART OF THE PLOT. DO NOT BE MISLEAD BY THE TITLE - NO MATTER WHAT COLOR; RED, GREEN, ORANGE, YELLOW, PURPLE - YOU WILL ENJOY THIS MOVIE. AS THEY SAY, TRUTH IS SOMETIMES MORE UNBELIEVABLE THAT FICTION. THIS MOVIE HAS A LOT OF REAL LIFE TRUTHS BEING TOLD, AND BY WHO BETTER THAN THE CHARACTER OF MADEA. WE COULD ALL USE A MADEA IN OUR FAMILIES!!!

This is one great movie

I bought the Madea movies because I saw one on television, and had to have it.
But be careful, you do get the movies, Otherside you get a play and unless you like musicals I don't beleive you would like those. I did not.
I love the charactor of Madea. She is a stickler for children with good manners, and is not afraid to swat the child when it needs it. Her brother, is as funny as she is, and her antics of getting him to do as she wants done is funny. I love the Madea movies but not the plays. This is a great movie.
