Disneynature - Earth (DVD, 2009)

Alastair Fothergill, Mark Linfield|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

Partially constructed from the groundbreaking BBC and Discovery Channel television series PLANET EARTH, EARTH is a ravishing and often gut-wrenching tale of natural survival and beauty. Five years in the making (including 250 days of aerial footage shot from planes, helicopters, and two-man balloons) and narrated by actor James Earl Jones, EARTH follows the trials of three families of polar bears, elephants, and whales. Though separated by seasons and continents, each family will cross great lengths and confront numerous hardships: for the Arctic polar bears, it is an increasingly warming planet that melts the ice they need for a hunting platform; for the African elephants, hot desert conditions and hungry predators will stand in the way of reaching a lush delta; and for the Pacific humpback whales, their Antarctic migration will be fraught with rough waters and great white sharks. Along the way, EARTH takes us on a global tour of nature in all its colorful splendor and harrowing moments--from windswept tundra to teeming rainforests, from cheetahs running down their prey to ducklings taking first flight. And as each family struggles towards their much-needed feeding grounds, directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield ultimately show us that nature can be equally giving and unforgiving. Educational but never preachy, EARTH is an unprecedented invitation for adults and children alike to experience the everyday natural wonders that deserve our awe and safeguarding.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[F]ocused on the trials of three animal families....Though these three family groupings get star billing, EARTH has room for other animals as well, including several kinds of birds, baboons for comic relief and all those caribou."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (04/22/2009)

"[T]he visual results are spectacular....Well worth seeing. Its depiction of the natural world is breathtaking and the animals and their behavior compelling."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (04/23/2009)

3 stars out of 4 -- "What we see is astonishing....EARTH is filled with unexpected facts....Beautiful and worthwhile..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (04/22/2009)

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "To watch the majesty of a shark snapping up a seal, or a panoramic time lapse of a field of trees blooming in spring and crumbling in winter, is to be struck by the fragility of life."
Box Office - Amy Nicholson (04/20/2009)

"EARTH's main virtue is its consistently spectacular cinematography. From the opening shots of white snow against a crisp blue sky, the images are rendered with dazzling, crystalline clarity."
Hollywood Reporter - Stephen Farber (04/17/2009)

"[A] gigantic collage of energy -- animals ceaselessly on the move in a planetary evolution that proceeds apace....The spectacle is stirring."
Wall Street Journal (04/24/2009)

Can we say WOW! Disney does NOT disappoint! Must Have!!

From start to finish... This documentary oooohs and ahhhhs! Spectacular visuals of the Animal Kingdom.

Believe me, you will not be disappointed! Great for the whole family ;) G rated as to that there is no gore/blood/guts.... Thank you Disney! lol

The bonus footage was just as good as the film itself... Amazing what went into this to capture all the magic that goes on in the world.

It took them 5 years to film all the footage. Job WELL DONE!!!! Brava!

I rented this just to fill up an hour or two and was more than pleasantly surprise... Liked it so much that upon finishing, I immediately went online to purchase it... Great to share with friends!

Blessings

This DVD is totally awesome. Beautiful scenes of nature and animals. I cried over the papa polar bear! Great for families. Would recommend to anyone who wants a clean, wholesome film. Reminds me of when I was a child in the 60's watching Disney's Wonderful World of Color. Today's kids don't know what they are missing!

This movie is pretty much a very short version on planet earth. They get some spectacular footage but the information in the video is not very accurate. They were off on their information on numerous occasions. But this is a Disney movie so I guess it's all in the name of making it "cute" which it is.

Amazing, but get BBC's Planet Earth instead

 | No, I would not recommend this product.

Fascinating to learn about what is happening all around this God-created planet.

I choose to filter out the false data rooted in the theory of evolution because it's has too many assumptions within it's core basis. If people making these films would just present it as based the evolution "theory", then I wouldn't have a problem with it, but stating something as fact, when it is only assumed and not proven, gets under my skin in any scenario. However, this did not warrant any star-reduction...

I would give this a 5-star rating, but I bought BBC's Planet Earth a week prior to this purchase. DisneyNature Earth is pretty much the exact same footage and narration (except by James Earl Jones instead) but much, much shorter. I could have saved myself the $10 and just stuck with Planet Earth.

Note:
DisneyNature Earth: $10 | 1 disc | 1.5 hours
BBC's Planet Earth: $30 | 5 discs | 8.8 hours
