Movie synopsis

Director Neill Blomkamp teams with producer Peter Jackson for this tale of extraterrestrial refugees stuck in contemporary South Africa. It's been 28 years since the aliens made first contact, but there was never any attack from the skies, nor any profound technological revelation capable of advancing our society. Instead, the aliens were treated as refugees. They were the last of their kind, and in order to accommodate them, the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home in District 9 as politicians and world leaders debated how to handle the situation. As the humans begin to grow wary of the unwelcome intruders, a private company called Multi-National United (MNU) is assigned the task of controlling the aliens. But MNU is less interested in the aliens' welfare than attempting to understand how their weaponry works. Should they manage to make that breakthrough, they will receive tremendous profits to fund their research. Unfortunately, the highly advanced weaponry requires alien DNA in order to be activated. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to biotechnology that causes his DNA to mutate, the tensions between the aliens and the humans intensifies. Wikus is the key to unlocking the alien's technology, and he quickly becomes the most wanted man on the planet. Ostracized and isolated, Wikus retreats to District 9 in a desperate bid to shake his dogged pursuers., THEATRICAL RELEASE DATE TO BE DETERMINEDSecrecy surrounds the plot of this science fiction film produced by Oscar winner Peter Jackson. DISTRICT 9 marks the directorial debut of Neill Blomkamp.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[T]his grossly engrossing speculative fiction bears Jackson's blood-spattered fingerprints but also heralds first-time feature director Neill Blomkamp as a nimble talent to watch."
Variety - Justin Chang

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[The filmmakers] have stealthily laid the artifacts of these dark days beneath the guise of an Alien invasion movie that is intense, graphically novelistic and just funny enough to keep thoroughly entertained, even while the subtext is of a very serious nature."
Box Office - Tim Cogshell (07/29/2009)

"[I]t's a helluva movie. No true fan of science fiction -- or, for that matter, cinema -- can help but thrill to the action, high stakes and suspense built around a very original chase movie."
Hollywood Reporter - Kirk Honeycutt (07/28/2009)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "You'll be wowed by Copley. His heart-rending tour de force deserves comparison to Jeff Goldblum's in THE FLY."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (08/20/2009)

"DISTRICT 9 fuses science fiction mayhem and biting social commentary as well as any film since STARSHIP TROOPERS. It's the rare alien invasion story that has the aliens running scared."
A.V. Club - Scott Tobias (08/13/2009)

"A thinking person's sci-fie movie from an inventive director...DISTRICT 9 revels in the fun of mashing up narrative styles..." -- Grade: A
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (08/21/2009)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- “With its clever faux documentary style, this is the most imaginative science-fiction movie to come along in years.”
USA Today - Claudia Puig (08/14/2009)

"DISTRICT 9 is very smart sci-fi, but that's just the beginning; it's also a scathing social satire hidden inside a terrific action thriller....It's a blast..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (08/14/2009)

3 stars out of 4 -- "[A] seamless merger of the mockumentary and special effects. And there's a harsh parable here about the alienation and treatment of refugees."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (08/13/2009)

"[O]ften inventive....DISTRICT 9 begins in cinéma vérité style with a collection of talking heads..."
Wall Street Journal (08/14/2009)

"[The filmmakers] embed their ideas in an ingenious, propulsive and suspenseful genre entertainment, one that respects your intelligence even as it makes your eyes pop..."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (08/14/2009)

4 stars out of 5 -- “[A] fascinating sci-fi specimen....The historical resonances only enhance the film’s blazing neo-realism, as does the dizzying, docu-style camerawork...”
Total Film - Matt Mueller (10/01/2009)

Included in Entertainment Weekly's "The Best Films Of The Year" -- "[A] madly original social drama/sci-fi thriller set in South Africa..."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (12/25/2009)

Ranked #7 in USA Today's "Top Ten Films Of 2009."
USA Today - USA Today Critic (12/31/2009)

Very Good

Created: 28/12/09
When I first started watching this movie I didn't think that I was going to like it. It starts off kinda like a weird sci-fi documentary and COPS combined into one weird sci-fi movie. But once it really got into the movie the more I liked it because it kinda went away from the whole documentary style movie. I was really surprised, because I was about to just stop watching it when it changed styles. It ends up being a really action packed movie with a lot of blood and gore like people exploding, body parts flying off, etc.

The only thing that I did not like about this movie was the language. Once it got into the movie it was just none stop f words all the way. I would recommend watching this movie if you are an adult, but I wouldn't let a child watch it.

Here is a little summary...

Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most vauluable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: "District 9".

Pure Science Fiction That Will Keep You Guessing!

Created: 27/01/10
District 9 takes place in an alternate time-line where, twenty years earlier, an alien spaceship comes to a halt above the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. The inhabitants of the ship are unable to operate the ship for some odd reason, so they wind up being segregated by humans to their own slums within the city below. Eventually, the government calls for the eviction of the aliens from the slums. This is where the story really picks up and gets interesting. The aliens (nicknamed prawns due to their appearance) are quite different from humans and extremely aggressive. The prawns love cat food and have an appetite for raw meat. The film's ostensible protagonist is Wikus (Sharlto Copley), who through a series of events, undergoes some dramatic changes to his body after some biological accident handling some kind of alien container that contains the energy to restart their ship.

The best thing about District 9 is that it always manages to stay fresh and surprising throughout. As the trailers indicate, it starts off as a mock-u-mentary in order to save time introducing us to the story. The film gradually crosses into being a more conventional film presentation, although still filmed with a very documentary look and feel interspersed with occasional news footage or interviews. Despite the unexpected change in presentation, you don't really notice because you become enthralled in the premise that these aliens are being caroused around like cattle, but with a legal twist.

Wikus' character development seems very important to the health of this film. We feel that somehow, this guy is just a bumbling pencil pusher who, because of his marriage to the boss has managed to land himself in charge of the corporation responsible to complete the daunting task of relocating the aliens further away from the city.

Along with many supporting actors, as well as CGI aliens, this film raises the bar in the pure science fiction world. Along with that, Chris, the prawn he befriends (who is surprisingly versatile for a CGI character) creates a really believable story. Even when the film's third act becomes incredibly action-packed, it still doesn't jar with the mood of the film and doesn't forsake its characters and intelligence for the sake of cheap action sequences.

The only important wish I have about the film was to actually see more alien presence at the same time, which was very lacking although their was one original scene which shows the aliens initially piled in together while trapped on the ship. Supposedly the intelligent beings had died off while in flight or the ship had somehow been captured by these lower life forms, but somehow were unable to pilot the space ship themselves, therefore close to perishing together trapped in close quarters within the belly of the ship itself. The CGI prawns seems to run in and out of the camera view, however, a count of the presence together on the screen together always yields approximately a half a dozen or so simultaneously.

It's worth mentioning that many great South African actors were used in this film including Vanessa Haywood (Wikus' Wife) who has has other small, yet impressive roles in her career.

A documentary type movie

Created: 22/12/09
An alien craft suddenly arrive above South Africa, once the government gets inside they find a group of aliens who are stranded and their ship is inoperable. The government sets them up in an area they call District 9.

Twenty years later, after the aliens have become a burden on society a group of MNU operatives is sent in to move the aliens to another location. One man become infected with an alien virus and is hunted by the government. The movie is about this mans flight from his own government and the aliens attempt to get out of the slum they have been forced to live in.

The movie is much like a documentary, it is well done and Peter Jackson has once again shown that he is an excellent film maker.

The only draw back is there is not enough action throughout the movie, it is at times too much like a documentary and not enough like a film.

The cast includes: David James, Devlin Brown, Jason Cope, Kenneth Nkosi, William Allen Young

I will not give away any secrets but will say that the movie left open a opportunity for a sequel at the end of this movie and I would not be surprised to see 'District 10' come out sometime in the future.

District 9: Is Just What It Says and Stays That Way!!

Created: 27/12/09
Peter Jackson has done it so very well again! Quite the unexpected form of science fiction, unlike "King Kong" and "The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy," DISTRICT 9 rates way up there with "Blade Runner". Grabbing and taking one's mind on an escapade of constantly moving eye-candy and definate creativity every sci-fi buff should feed on! From the very beginning, this story captures the imagination and takes you far into a journey, following a whole other culture of aliens forced to survive here on earth, stranded, herded, and ruled over in an area known as "District 9". With rampant crime, violence, and mystery surrounding every moment, Jackson takes the viewer on a highly pumped adrenaline ride along side the character, Wickus, as he makes his way through the many twists and turns of an alien lifestyle, and his only single choice is but to learn, and to live with them. Every twisting moment, begins immediatly anew, with more heart-stopping scenes striking up at the next bizzare back alley, among the shanty towns and shacks throughout the eerie housing, among the aliens, and the fenced, bordered, walled in areas known and named, "DISTRICT 9". This film will stay with you long after watching it. Highly recommended!!!

Scifi fans only!!! Don't look into the movie too much!

Created: 08/01/10
OK, listen (to those that hated it) take the stance of a dirty star wars and the science fiction aspect of it and then give your opinion. Although it does have a politically driven msg. but the movie itself doesn't force the issue down your throat. The picture itself is good a mixture of different handheld cameras and digital footage were just enough to keep you interested. It plays like a documentary at first but the action starts to get going sooner rather than later, give it time. Also, try not to watch this movie while eating something if you have a sensitive stomach. A lot of puke and stuff flying off and around the area of things whether its alien or human every other scene seems like this happens towards the end. This is not a bad thing it is graphic and the effects are really good. This a great concept for a scifi movie and if it were shot in any other city like LA or NY with someone like Brad Pitt in the lead I'm positive this would have been a box office smash. Because of the unknown actors and political view the world has about S. African anything, this is sure not to be the movie for everyone.
