Why "Excellent"? How can you go wrong buying a DVD for $0.49+$2.99S/H? If you can beat it, buy it. I paid for this on 10/22/2011. I can sum my review up in 4 words and 1 letter; simply put - "cheap entertainment during a recession". Why buy the movie? It is a blast of nostalgia and a nice diversion from reality. This film was released on July 24, 1998; the DVD in 1999. The film doesn't feel too "dated", as the overall concepts of how (or whether) you "fit in" with others and who you chose as your friends are essentially something that teenagers (as well as adults) will always struggle with and it is something we can all relate to. There are some other basic themes and concepts too, but ya gotta watch it to find out; some might even be helpful with that whole "other side of the coin" perspective. For me, it was when I was watching the deleted scenes. It was a night scene and a moment between the father & son. The moment was when the son turned his back on his father and then turned back and almost tried to say something, but he didn't. For me, it was that little light bulb moment and a feeling of empathy. It helped me to understand more of the back-story of the character's feelings of ending up where they are, the choices they'd made, and how they are dealing with one another. They both have to deal with a personal loss and they both have to try to deal with not pushing away or losing the one that is still there with them. Okay, okay, if this were a touchy-feely Hallmark movie, it could've been expounded upon. Since this is not "Getting in touch with your feelings 101", let's move on. Who are the actors/stars of the show and why should you care? Well, this is part of the fun too. Even if the movie is a yawn-a-rama and/or isn't scary enough for you, there is some fun with the whole where have I seen that person before? There are a lot of young faces you may recognize...if you look hard enough (i.e. Tygh Runyan, David Paetkau, and Katharine Isabelle...just to name a few). There are also a few other "older" faces you might recognize...those people would be Steve Railsback, Bruce Greenwood, and William Sadler. The three listed on the DVD are James Marsden, Katie Holmes, and Nick Stahl. If you care enough, you might already know them and where you've seen them before; or you might be asking yourself - where have I seen that person before? FYI: James Marsden was "Scott Summers/Cyclops" in the X-Men movie (2000). Katie Holmes is probably best remembered for her role in the television show Dawson's Creek (1998-2003) and for becoming Mrs. Tom Cruise. Nick Stahl might be best remembered for his role as a young "John Connor" in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003). So for the guys, you have a sexy (19 yr. old) Katie Holmes (way before she married Tom Cruise) to look at. For the gals, you have either a sexy (24 yr. old) James Marsden or a sexy (18 yr. old) Nick Stahl to look at. The ages are based on their birthdates (from IMDB), prior to the release of the film. The insert inside the DVD (if you get an older DVD copy) will mention Marsden at 26 and Holmes at 19. So all kinds of fun stuff to learn, besides watching an "old" movie. The real question(s) might be - could this ever happen to you or your friends? Could watching this movie ever save your life? Naaah, probably not; but it might give you tips as to what to do and what not to do, if you ever find yourself slowly surrounded by the "Blue Ribbons". Enjoy.

Best 'teen' movie, period

Created: 09/11/08
To me, this still constitutes as a teen movie, even though it's horror... technically. This is in the series of horror movies that's watchable w/out putting oneself on the edge of sanity, which is what happens to me after movies like Wolf Creek, Touristas, Hostel, Hills Have Eyes, yada yada.
This is thrilling, shaking, yet enjoyable.
Katie Holmes is gives the chance, yet again, to step out of her goody-two-shoes rep she got from Dawson's Creek. Here, she plays something of a goth, yet very likable.
The best thing about this movie is that it shoes high school cliques, but it actually makes it work. Acting is believable, no scenes leave the audience rolling their eyes. My favorite phrase by one of the main characters: "Appropriate sparkkks are flyin!"
This is an excellent addition to the horror genre, next to Stir of Echoes, Ghostship, and Dark Water.
