And in reclaiming center stage in the arena, THE DIVISION BELL straightaway tolls a characteristic chime of ambivalence, as a voice cries out from the heart of a massed chorale and strings, "What Do You Want From Me."But for longtime fans of Pink Floyd, THE DIVISION BELL offers an immense, reassuring sense of scale, as David Gilmour and company continue to expand upon the dark subtexts, rich orchestral textures and densely detailed arrangements that are the band's sonic signatures. A song such as the moody film noir jazz-pop intro of "Wearing the Inside Out" presages the mysterious futuristic romanticism of the BLADE RUNNER soundtrack, with lyrics that offer a typically mordant view of lifeSomewhere in the heart of all this darkness, David Gilmour's arching, anthemic guitar provides a powerful melodic focus, as on the moody instrumental tone poem "Marooned," where he seems to be floating out of Earth's orbit until Nick Mason's strong, centered drumming grounds his elisions in the gravitational pull of a simple backbeat. The closing "High Hopes" mixes mysticism with a dream-the-impossible groove, as Pink Floyd looks back longingly at old times and old friends. "Marooned" won a 1995 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Powerful Music and Lyrics

Created: 01/12/09
Well, it was said that Pink Floyd could not carry on without Roger Walters, and "Momentary Lapse of Reason" proved that wrong. On their second post-Walters effort, the other members of Pink Floyd shine, especially David Gilmore, who carries the lion's share of writing and singing. In fact, most of the lyrics on the "Division Bell" could be aimed at Walters. With all of that aside, this is truly a great recording. The music and lyrics sound powerful and melancholy, yet hopeful somehow. Personal favorites are "A Great Day for Freedom," "Coming Back to Life," "Lost for Words" and "High Hopes." Then again, I like all of the songs on this album.
This is not your trippy, acid-soaked Pink Floyd; this is serious. And damned good! In fact, the more I listen to it, the more I get out of it and the more I like it. This is fast becoming my favorite Pink Floyd album!

Pink Floyd Division Bell

Hey Pink Floyd Rocks I love their live shows from 1987 til 1994. Pink Floyd puts on a great concert. Alot of their songs such as HIGH HOPES remind me of childhood ,of how good it was then .I can relate to COMING BACK TO LIFE and TAKE IT BACK . I'm sure alot of you could relate to these songs if you'd really listen to them . LOST FOR WORDS has some really good acoustic guitar . I have played guitar for many years and I believe David Gilmour is the best I've ever seen .He can play electric , classical and steel .If I had a choice , I'd want to play just like him . I'm always talking about PF and I try to get others to check them out. The four songs I mentioned are from DIVISION BELL . HIGH HOPES , COMING BACK TO LIFE and TAKE IT BACK are also on the PULSE dvd . Hey , if you are a Pink Floyd fan , You gotta see PULSE .... please ? Do yourself a favor . Thanks wannameucci

Great Floyd CD!

Created: 24/05/10
By far, the best Gilmour-inspired CD ever. Although Roger Waters was not part of this CD, it is one of my favorites by Pink Floyd. It also is one of the greatest CD's to give or get a professional massage. From the beginning notes on the piano to the very last note on the CD, the music and lyrics are some of the best by Floyd. And like Dark Side and Animals and Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell will still be sounding great decades from now. If you are a Floyd fan, this is a must-have. If you are not, this might turn you into one.

The dreamier side of Floyd

Created: 04/08/09
This release was not critically acclaimed. This release was in fact not completely accepted by old-school Floyd fans. This release is different than anything else the band had done up to its point (1994)...but for me, that was exactly the point, and reason why I like it so much. It is a very "mature" release, deals with loss, deals with introspective issues ie: "What do you want from me" "you can sell your soul for complete control, is that really what you need?" "you can lose your selfish pride, see inside, there is nothing to hide, turn and face the light". Yes, profound lyrics are the hallmark of Division Bell. I was lucky enough to see the band perform in the Ohio State University football stadium lovingly known as "The Shoe" during the tour that followed this years release and let me tell you, the band was great, this music is great and anyone who can't recognize that fact maybe should give it more of a chance and try to not compare it to anything that came before it.
