The initial single, the spookily obsessive "The One I Love," was an unexpected Top 10 hit, and its follow-up, the "Subterranean Homesick Blues"-style rant "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," became one of R.E.M.'s most renowned songs. The first R.E.M. album produced by Scott Litt (soon to be a frequent collaborator) DOCUMENT skillfully blends the commercial gloss of LIFE'S RICH PAGEANT and the mysterioso murk of FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION, combining the best elements of both for what would soon become R.E.M.'s signature sound. (Note the thumping rhythm section on the opening "Finest Worksong" and the oddly buoyant melody of "Exhuming McCarthy.") The band even manages to salute one of its favorite predecessors by romping through a loose, fun cover of Wire's "Strange."

4 stars out of 5 -- On album five, R.E.M. went platinum for the first time...

4 stars out of 5 - ...makes interesting archival listening. It shows a group cresting the cusp between art-rock alternative-ism and chart friendliness....the general impression is of a band freed from constraints, rocking with a vengeance...

Document is one of REM finest albums. A bridge between their early work and their commercial success of later albums. The producer Scott Litt helps shape their sound, that we have come to know.Songs like finest worksong is an underrated classic! Not often heard. The album is very balanced. It is a good intro to REM.The lyrics of the songs on the album is what caused me to purchase Document.Bittersweet ,beautiful and whimsical:Like the end of the world as we know it.Highly Recommend !

It's The End Of The World...

Created: 19/08/07
There are a lot of good REM albums and then there are the great ones. Document is one of the great ones. The casual listener will recognize a few awesome tracks (It's The End Of The World As We Know It And I Feel Fine, The One I Love etc.) but there is much more than a few hits to be found here. 11 fantastic pop/rock tunes make this a must own for any REM fan. 5 Stars.

Stipe in the place where you live.

Created: 04/07/09
It's always good to have an R.E.M. album in the place where you live; it makes life all the more enjoyable. Being a devout Stipe worshipper for the past 25 years, I cannot objectively critique the album Document though can recite it's every lyric from memory and recommend it's message that while it may very well be the end of the world as we know it - thanks to the love and support of those in the business of loving and supporting - we can remain fine.

Document- REM

REM is kick-ass and I love their 90s stuff because the 90s also kick ass!!
So I would say if you like REM buy this CD. On the other hand the Miller-Coors Brewing Co. donated over $30,000 to organizations that support illegal aliens.
Dump the beer, dump the stock!!! Don't drink Miller pass it on.
