Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 24, 2006This fanciful tale is based on an old children's television series from England, THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT., The origins of the characters in DOOGAL stretch back to 1964 and a TV program called THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT (or "Le Manège Enchanté" as its French creator Serge Danot called it). The show became a popular staple on British television, and this full-length movie is the first attempt to acquaint American audiences with Danot's magical world.Zeebad (voiced by THE DAILY SHOW's Jon Stewart) is a recently escaped convict whose powers as a sorcerer are known throughout the land. While fleeing from prison, the embittered Zeebad decides to capture some mystical diamonds with the power to freeze the sun. Zeebad's devious dream is to freeze the entire globe as an act of revenge on those who imprisoned him. But he doesn't bank on the resilient forces of heroic canine Doogal (Daniel Tay) and his friends, a snail named Brian (William H. Macy), a hippie-ish rabbit called Dylan (Jimmy Fallon), and a loveable pink cow by the name of Ermintrude (Whoopi Goldberg). Together, they venture across the world in a desperate bid to find the ancient stones before the dastardly Zeebad gets his hands on them. Doogal and his friends scatter a few amusing references to popular culture into the plot as the story unfolds, and the animation is rendered in a style instantly familiar to fans of movies such as FINDING NEMO and HOODWINKED. Fans of the original television show who are looking for a fond, nostalgic experience won't find much to remind them of Danot's creation in DOOGAL, which is a fast-paced action romp aimed at a young audience. But for a new generation of fans this is a great way to get acquainted with a bunch of loveable characters who passed their 40th birthday on completion of the film.

Oh dear....where's the story????

Created: 17/09/06
I enjoy watching movies with my toddler...some she gets excited about, me less so; others I look forward to - and this was one of those movies!! I grew up in the UK and enjoyed 'The Magic Roundabout" a beloved children's classic, and much later a cult show! Doogal is adapted from this cartoon and features all the same characters so I was interested in seeing this and sharing part of my childhood with her.....alas, this movie did not live up to my expectations and my toddler quickly went back to her Lego!!
Initially my familiarity with the orginal show and the long list of stars that lend their voices to this movie - Jimmy Fallon, Whoopie Goldberg, William, H. Macy and the funny Jon Stewart - promised good things..but the movie just missed one key element - a good hook to draw the audience in !
Sure, the movie had a premise - Doogal has a mission to complete in order to save his friends - and indeed the world against the spells of the evil Zeebad who has resurfaced and is out to cause strife. We, as the audience follow Doogal on this mission, but this is where we started to lose interest! The plot struggled, and often got sidetracked. It seemed to repeat itself in some areas ...and forget what the movie was about in others, to the point where we all switched off and did not care about the ending which was predictable!
Maybe someone out there will enjoy this movie, but for us, it was not well thought out and did not engage us so for that, I have to give it a poor rating!

Doogal is a "feel-good" movie!

Created: 30/10/10
Doogal tackles the classic story line of good vs. evil in this 3-D computer-animated movie. Will the good guys (depicted by toys and animals) reach the enchanted crystals first on a journey to save the earth from freezing over? or will the evil-dooer reach them to rule the frozen world? There's no time for kids to get bored in this fast-paced adventure. Adults, don't be afraid to sit and watch it with your kids either--there's many references to movies and phrases only we could relate to (i.e. Nero in Matrix). But, there are the goofy references to "tooting" to keep the kids laughing. Likable characters and entertaining celebrity voices used in this film such as Chevy Chase, William H. Macy and Whoopi! Buy it; you'll like it.

This is a good pre-school movie

Created: 02/07/06
This movie hosts a great cast of famous Hollywood people acting voice for one of the most boring, predictable movies I've ever seen. I watched it with my 20 month grandaughter and she giggled at some of the scenes, and was content with it as long as she was being held. There were several one-liners that were obviously aimed at an adult audience that were mildly funny but overall, the enjoyment obtained from the movie came from holding my grandaughter and watching her occasionally giggle. I will probably never watch this movie willingly again. I bought it because it was advertised as a great family movie with a G rating and thought I would like to support this kind of entertainment; it should have had a "K" rating for kindergarten or younger; that way, I would have anticipated a silly movie experience. Oh well, live and learn - that's the risk of buying movies before actually viewing them.

Doogal

This was a surprise animated movie. Turns out it rivals Disneys in many respects. The gold cast of actors and actresses voices for the characters was great. The plot of the story was clean and interesting, keeping the viewers' attention. The storyline of good vs. bad was well written and very funny in parts. Hadn't heard of it before seeing it on Ebay that I can recall. But seeing the reviews, thought it would be a good addition to our child's library, and it certainly is.

Doogal: Such a cute movie

Created: 02/03/07
I purchased Doogal for my daughter. She loves animated movies. This movie was so cute. The clumsy dog (Doogal) accidentally creates a world of trouble. But, him and his flawed friends manage to save the day. It proves that heart and spirit rise above physical strength and evil. I give this movie 5 stars. My children enjoy it and I loved watching it with them. Highly recommended!!!
