Doom (DVD, 2006, Unrated Extended Edition)

Andrzej Bartkowiak, The Rock, Karl Urban|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: Unrated

Movie synopsis

In the not-so-distant future, a portal has been discovered leading from Earth to Mars, where the government operates a research base to examine the ruins of a lost civilization; scientists are studying it, conducting experiments they perhaps shouldn't be, and trying find out what happened. Answer: nothing good. That's what Sarge (The Rock) and his unit of high-tech Marines find out the hard way when they're sent to investigate a disturbance on the base--which turns out to be nothing less than an infestation of terrifying, evil, flesh-eating monsters.DOOM, based on one of the most popular video games of all time, knows exactly what it wants to do, and wastes no time in doing it. Andrzej Bartkowiak, the director of lean, effective action flicks like ROMEO MUST DIE and EXIT WOUNDS, gets right to the meat of the movie: marines versus monsters in dark, dank corridors. The Rock brings just the right balance of bad-ass attitude and deadpan humor to the role of Sarge, while the cast's other standout is Reaper (LORD OF THE RINGS' Karl Urban), who tries to repair his strained relationship with his sister Samantha (Rosamund Pike), one of the base's scientists. They're joined by a motley crew, including the twisted Portman, intensely religious Goat, affable Duke, and newbie The Kid. While the plot differs from that of the game in a few key ways, it remains true to the spirit of the original--a no-frills fest of shooting, explosions, gore, and vicious zombies. The game was, of course, a "first-person shooter," and in an inspired moment, the movie turns itself into one for a stretch. It's exhilarating, as are several surprising twists that separate this fun, streamlined action extravaganza from lesser video game adaptations.

First i am no critic nor do i care do become one now. Second i like mindless senseless gun slinging kill "em" all and let God sort them them out movies with no plots and weak story lines that fall somewhere in between Sci-Fi and the horror genres. Thirdly i like the Rock, he is stuck between a rock and a hard place and cannot really seem to define his roles as to date. Baby sitter or grunt to avenging gilted lover with a vendetta, BUT, he adds a certain " I like that guy" to each role he portrays, though i wish he would pick a certain study (sci-fi) and stick with it, he is good at it. The movie in a nut shell is ok, it has some good effects and weapons are aplenty albeit somewhat dated for the year 2046, until our vaunted hero finds a way into the...!!!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!!!...top secret mars weapon labs and grabs the B.F.G. weapon, yes, if you were thinking what i think you are thinking B.F.G. stands for then you are correct, no need for me to expound on that bit of terminology further. The supporting cast carrys themselves well and they act and drill as a cohesive unit. You will find yourself guessing who gets killed off in a grisly fashion as the squad wanders deeper and further into the complex. Well nuff said, as you will note i rated this movie as good, i enjoyed it, it is NOT the video game and if this is what you purchased it for expect a big let down, but with a open mind you can, to a point, enjoy the fare presented to you, omit the little tikes though, this movie is laced with colorful metaphors and cussing like you aint never!!!, along with plenty of blood and dripping gore. Thank you for reading and have a nice movie time.

Pretty Good Movie

I wasn't really excited to hear there was a movie coming out based on the game. I thought they couldn't live up to the excitement I had all the times I played the game but I was wrong. The action and everything goes with the games almost perfectly. There are some scenes where you think "I remember that pit, I fell in it a couple times before". The monsters are also done very well.

The best thing about this movie is that they do a scene were its in single person shooter mode. It looks just like the game! I think they did it just at the right time and not to much (You could almost get sea sick from it if they did it too long).

All the actors did a great job and you could tell they had been trained for this movie. Also the special features are great also because you get a look not only into the movie but the game also. It brings back a lot of memories watching them talk about the game. If you like the game, This is a must see!!!!

In "Doom," an estranged brother and sister meet on Mars, where she is a forensic archaeologist and he is a soldier sent to quell an uprising of mutants. Desperate to humanize the characters in this video game turned action flick, the writers came up with this bit of tension, when Samantha Grimm (Rosamund Pike) chides her gifted brother for squandering his intellect: "Does it ever bother you that you could have spent your life looking into a microscope instead of a sniper scope?" We expect a moral from a tale about the Grimms, but this claustrophobic mess of a movie offers only carnage. This spectacle is really just a formulaic shoot'em-up, with dead bodies amassing on the floor of an underground Martian laboratory.

Rockin' with Doom

This movie is a fantastic rendition of the once famous, "Doom" video game, which was the first first-person shooter game to come out.

There is great special effects, with a script that rocks. Unless you don't like mutating scientists or zombie pandemics, you won't go wrong with Doom.

Not Doomed after all!!!!

This movie Rocks!! It has everything you could ask for in a movie based on a video game. If you played Doom 3 you can definetly see the connection to the movie. The only reason I give this a 4 out of 5 is for 1 reasons. 1.) it's the monsters. Doom and Resident evil seemed too much alike in the zombie thing and that didn't fly with me. However the mutated monsters looked AWESOME This movie is definetly a must see, so go and see it NOW!!!!
